Lubera stops plant deliveries to the UK
Due to Brexit, we are not able to deliver to the UK. We are working on a solution on how we can continue to bring a wide range of Lubera plants to the UK and directly to our customers' homes in the future. However, such a solution will not be available before 2022 or 2023.

Dahlias: Preparing a dahlia rösti...

We can’t believe that an Englishman really told us how to make rösti (Swiss style hash browns) ;-) For us in Switzerland that's a bit ... hard. But ok. Now we hope that English instructions for preparing fondue will not follow …

Here we want to present you with a dahlia rösti, more specifically James Wong's dahlias rösti. James Wong is a kind of star in the English gardening scene. And he was the very first customer at our English online shop, which we launched earlier this year. So we are somehow connected in a very special way with him ;-)
And when we're already talking about international hash browns, then let’s make it a little more international. After all, we don’t just use any dahlia tubers, but our K & K dahlias and they originate from Austria, from the dahlia breeder Peter Haslhofer. Now only our German customers have yet to try the recipe...

Before we give you the recipe, here is some extra information: We want to cook dahlias, not the flowers, not the leaves, but the tubers. But please only use the tubers that you have grown yourself in your garden…young, fresh, crunchy tubers. Do not use tubers that can be bought at garden centres because they are usually treated chemically. The goal here is dahlia enjoyment, not to poison yourself!


Dahlia Rösti by James Wong

Dahlia tubers are firm, slightly sweet and they have a delicate hazelnut taste. They are actually ideal for cooking and are perfect for making röstis:

Peel 1 kg fresh dahlia tubers and place the peeled tubers in water. Grate the dahlias coarsely, together with a red onion. Add the juice of ½ lemon to the mass. Then put everything in a tea towel and squeeze out the excess water using the cloth. The dahlia mass should ultimately contain as little moisture as possible. Add two eggs and then some flour (about 6 tablespoons) and season with nutmeg, salt and pepper. Mix everything to a firm “dough”. Then divide the mass into small mounds; form 1 cm thick patties and fry them in hot olive oil until golden brown. Voilà. The röstis alone are already delicious, but can of course be eaten with many different side dishes – gourmet cuisine has no limits!

Unfortunately we have not yet made ​​our own food photos. We will post some soon, though! Until then, take a look at James Wong’s site – it is worth it!

We have just one request: Don’t go running to your garden now and prematurely put an end to the dahlia splendour. Wait at least until October, or if you are in doubt until the first frost has snatched away the magnificent dahlias.

And one more thing: All dahlias testers who received a free trial package from us in the spring, we wish to remind you of your "duty": do not dig up the dahlias and overwinter them. No, no, they are to be eaten! And then please tell us your experiences. Write to us and send us pictures…we thank you in advance!
