Apple RedloveŽ Sirena

Be one of the first to grow it!

It's the fruit sensation that everyone's talking about - you may have read about it in the Daily Mail or on the BBC site but this is the only place where you can buy Redlove®!
Uniquely coloured - Rosy-red flesh with a beautiful pattern running through it
Deliciously tasty - Crisp and juicy with a hint of berries
Even better for you - Higher in antioxidants than other apples
Disease resistant - Exceptionally high resistance to scab
Attractive in the garden - Unusual, long-lasting, deep pink spring blossom
Versatile in the kitchen - Delicious eaten raw but also ideal for cooking (it retains its red colour)
Grown on M9 rootstock, it will produce an easily managed tree up to approximately 2.5m (8') tall in the garden, smaller if grown in a large container. Though not self-fertile, it's easily pollinated by other apple trees, even up to 300m away. Supplied as a top quality 1 year old, single stem, bare root plant, with full growing instructions. Order now and you can be one of the first to grow this unique new fruit!
Sirena - Fine fleshed with a refreshing, tangy flavour; harvest from late August until early September and eat straight from the tree or store until the end of October.

#45 The commercial production of Redlove trees

This year it is all about Redloves. The professional fruit growers will start growing Redloves this year. So you, the customer, will be able to buy Redloves in your supermarket in a couple of year. Until then you can grow your own Redloves and pick the apples right in your garden. And let`s be honest, it always tastes better this way.

Hi Markus,
I'm trying to find out if I can buy Redlove trees in France. I would really like at least one, but am not sure if I could take one out of England to France (I believe it's illegal!) Or maybe you sell from your Swiss site to France, but my German is not good enough to order from that site.
Thanks

Hallo Su

for your personal and private use you can surely transport within the EU. No problem.

So buy in UK and transport to France!

Enjoy the Redloves

Markus - Just to let you know I had a poor response when I contacted your UK Licencee Chingford/AG Thames a month or so ago. They seem to have a lot of things going on there - in fact when I phoned them no one really knew about your apple!! It may have just been a particularly busy day for them but I suggest that they at least have a named representative othewise you may loose sales.

Why I tell you this is we grow 20 acres of organic blueberries mainly for Riverford Organics and were interested in possibly asking you about whether you would be interested in us creating an organic redlove apple that we could grow along side our blueberries.

kind regards

Robin

Apple Redlove Sirena planted 18 Nov 2010 and growing well in very large pot. Can you advise on pruning the side branches - when and how, and where the apples will grow from as pictures show from upright stems and not branches. Also should I remove all the flowers that may bloom this year, or only leave a few and then allow only a couple of actual apples to grow in its third year? It does look lovely and I'm hopefully for the future. Thank you so much.

2011-06-02: Markus Kobelt said...

-the small sidebranches com from the concurrence between trees, they are planted at 50cm
-you can have a similar effekt if you bind them below the horizontale if they are 30-40cm long. They will stop growing and set blooms for next year.
-you can leave up to 4/5 apples this year

I am interested in buying some of these trees, but can find no information about what root stock they are on or the fruiting time and whether they are keepers or need eating quickly. Any information would be appreciated.

2011-12-07: Falko Berg said...

The Redloves are all winter grafted on the slow growing M9 rootstock. The fruiting time varies within the different varieties:

Era - can be picked around 10-20th september, storable until christmas

Circe - can be picked around 20th of august, storable until end of September

Sirena - can be picked around mid august, storable until end of September

I went to Sutton's website and ordered one of each tree only to find out that they do not ship them internationally, not even within the EU.

'The following items were removed from your basket due to Restrictions'

That means that there is no way of buying these trees? What is with this exclusivity thing? Why don't they let people buy them?

2011-12-13: Falko Berg said...

Sorry I do not understand, from where did you try to order the trees?

Right now you can buy the Redlove trees:

- for Germany, Switzerland and Austria you can order them directly at our onlineshop www.Lubera.com

- for the UK you can order them at Suttons

- for Ireland you can order them at Mr. Middleton

2011-12-13: Patrick Callan said...

Sorry, I forgot :)
I'm in Sweden. I just read on the swedish environmental protection agency's website that Malus sp. can be imported with a phytosanitary license- no problem (Same rules as for all EU countries)

I emailed Sutton's as well but I think it's just their policy not to sell to other countries. Maybe there is somewhere else I can turn? I have been waiting to buy this variety for years! I thought we joined the EU so these things would be simpler ;)

Thanks for your help!

2011-12-13: Manuel Rodenas Morote said...

2011-12-13: Falko Berg said...

@Manuel: No habla espagnol, sorry. Please write in englisch, deutsch ou francaise

@Patrick:
Sorry but an export to sweden is not possible at this moment due to logistic reasons. There are still too many restrictions, too much paper work and a delivery would be way more expensive than the tree would actually cost (we do not ship standard packages, the packages are open on top which makes a delivery way more expensive.). I do not know how Suttons handles this though.

Regards

Falko Berg

2011-12-13: Patrick Callan said...

@Falko: Manuel has the exact same problem as I do :) He is wondering where he can buy it online from another EU country, because Sutton's don't send outside the UK. Maybe I can drive to Germany and collect it there.

Redloves are also pollinated by normal apples. in the blossom time insects are trajnsporting enough pollen to pollinate. so pollination shoudn't be a problem at all

#1 The breeding of RedlovesŽ

Posted by Markus Kobelt | 2010-07-16

Markus Kobelt is talking about the Redloves® the new redflesh apples. You can see the full beauty of the red/pink blooms which makes Redloves®, besides the good special taste, a nice ornamental attraction in your garden. The video also shows the actual work of a breeder, his colleague Daniel is pollenizing the bloom manually. This way we avoid a random pollenization by insects.

2011-02-08: Markus Kobelt said...

Era is in the middle blooming season and can be pollinised by most other apple varieties. In 99% of all gardends, apple pollinisation is no problem because bees and insects are transporting plenty of apple pollen

Dear Markus,
I have really enjoyed watching your videos about Redlove apples and would like to buy two from Suttons. I am making a garden for young children and was thinking of marking a gateway with one eaither side and thought columnar maybe best, however I am not sure how tall the columnar will grow. Please could you advise whether this will be ok and the width apart I should plant them for best success. With many thanks, Lou

2011-02-14: Markus Kobelt said...

Hallo Lou.

Redloves are normal type growing, and not columnar. That said it ist possible to keep them at about 1-1.50 m diameter.

for children I would suggest Era and Circe, so you have two different ripening times

Hi, I have purchased three batches ( 20 trees ) of the redlove era apple tree from suttons, the first batch of 5 were sent as 2yr old trees ( stated on their labels) all 5 doing fine, then another batch of 5 were sent, they were smaller trees altogether, and when I cared to look at the labels a few weeks after planting, all details were exactly the same, except for the words 1 yr old !, Three of these trees just didnt leaf / bloom, the others did and all trees in all batches were planted identically, an in accordance with the enclosed instructions. I called suttons and was told they had no idea why they had different age trees and couldnt answer why 2 yr old trees were sent intially, and that 1 yr olds were then being sent out. They also couldnt help with why 3 of the trees had died !. A bit more worringly was when I queried what age tree i wouild get on this next batch, ( not yet delivered), and was told they should be 2 yr old, but they cant tell either way, although they are advertised as 1 yr old.!. I was very impressed by the tree when I first saw the flower and apple and wanted to make my own private orchard based soley of these trees but the lack of product consistency, and the death of a few of them for no apparent reason and no support from the supplier has made me question the viability of setting up an orchard of these trees. I have another Area I wish to make an Orchard shortly, but am very cautious on planting redlove.

2011-05-28: Markus Kobelt said...

Suttons has received 1 year old trees and 2 year old knip trees. We have no control how they are storing and sellng them but it would make sense to make two different prizes.

With bare rooted trees its very important how trees are stored because in principle since they are digged out they only loose water/reserves....That could be the reason why some of the one year trees didtn grow on. On the other hand normally 2 year old trees have a bigger planting shock than one year old ones.
In our nursery in Switzerland till 15th of June we are still potting 1 year old trees from the cold store (with 99% humidity) and every one is growing....But also the transport from the cold store to the client and then the time being planted and the methods of planting can make big differences...

To avoid this type of problems we are only selling containertrees in Switzerland and Germany - which make a big quality difference but also a prize-differenec because transportation costs are huge.

Hope you will have the first test fruits this year

Markus

Hello lubera®, hello Mr. Markus Kobelt,

I write in english with some difficulties, excuse me,

lubera®, Redlove®, Era®, Circe®, Sirena®, what's that ® ending name?
Are that names registered or protected and where?
Are that names protected trade marks or registered fruit cultivars?

You have a dutch (swiss) and english marketting Web sites using the symbol ®, but a single public page in english, in .pdf file form, for each variety, including protection details, (in french: 'une fiche variétale') is not loadable from your sites.
Look at ' http://www.ueb.cas.cz/cs/system/files/users/public/OPAL.pdf ' for an exemple.

For a public description of a variety, a .pdf page is easy printable and more durable than a more evolutive Web page.

should I expect fruit in the first season or not.

Hello, We were given a present of a Redlove in February 2011 and have planted it in a container as per the instructions. We are hoping to re plant it at a later time into the ground when our garden plan is ready. At the moment it is looking like it needs pruning ? I would appreciate advise on this and any other care it would benefit from. Thanking you. p.s. we & the redlove live in London.

I bought a redlove (1year old) tree just before Christmas and want to plant it in a container. Could you tell me what size pot would be best and do I need special compost?

I see other nurseries are breeding red-fleshed apples: have you tried them? www.greenmantlenursery.com/fruit/rosetta-apples.htm

2012-03-24: Markus Kobelt said...

@Michelle: I would use a pot with more than 50lt.
@ Jo: These are old US-varieties, bred in the forties by the well known pomologist Etter. We know these American apples only by literature and havent tested them.

We started with other genetic material, and adding more quality to the redfleshed apples , in the same time we also brought scab resistance into them.

Our breeding work goes forward, last year we produced about 15 000 seed only for the redfleshed program. Our goal: Redloves which are much better than normal apples;-)

Thanks for your answer.
I really like the appearance of the Redlove varieties and the fact that they do not turn brown when you chop them up.
Do you know if any of these will be available in Norway?

I'm convinced these varieties would be a major hit Norway if they were possible to purchase.

Unfortunately we can only grow varieties which have a season <= Elstar. Elstar can only be grown on the best locations.
