Gooseberry Easycrisp® Lady Sun (thornless)

The first thornless yellow gooseberry!

Bred by Lubera, Lady Sun is virtually thornless on its fruit-bearing branches - so you won't get hurt when you pick the delicious gooseberries! It has a strong upright habit, and shows good resistance to American powdery mildew, producing good crops of sweet-tasting, juicy berries with a delightful aroma and thin skins. Plants will grow well in most soils, either in the garden or in a container on the patio. Crops from early July. Supplied in a 13cm pot.

Glad to hear that new gooseberry types are coming in, so few people seem to grow them now.
I've tried growing these :
Rokula - didn't like this, nasty taste (I've removed this one now).
Golden Drop - very good taste, small berries.
Early Sulphur - good.
London - nice looking, big red smooth berries, but taste not so good and tough skin.
Woodpecker - not so good taste, berries tend to split, I will remove this one.
Langley Gage - OK but not the nicest.
Hinnonmaki Yellow - nice.
Remarka - perhaps my favourite.

I find many gooseberries have a 'bubblegum' taste which I don't really like, I prefer those without too much of this taste.

Hallo Luke

Thanks for your comments which are the first ones on our brandnew site....

You are right with the bubblegum taste - but often this is also caused by picking too late.

From the size and taste I would definitely recommend our variety Crispa Espera wich has a very fresh and fruity arome. In future we will also sell Crispa Flavia in England which is a very early one.

Also we are preparing very good eating and big yellow and green varieties. So you have good reasons to visit our site again from time to time;-)

I'm now growing most of my gooseberries as cordons - much less bloody, but still a few scratches of course.

2010-08-16: Markus Kobelt said...

Hallo Luke.

Good point. But in the breeding cordons would be much too time consuming and in the end too expensive

But for the garden its a good idea. It's a pity that many cordons I see in gardens are neglected: not pruned for years, only old wood. If you want to have cordons, you have to prune every year (cutting old sidewood which was bearing fruit, forcing the plantt to produce new sidebranches which will bear good fruit qualitiy the next years... You know....

I grow Invicta lots of thorns, Leveller and sometimes suffer mildew and Whinham Industry again lots of thorns but a nice gooseberry when ripe. All make easy new cuttings.
