Product information "Autumn Raspberry Primeberry® Autumn Chef®"

Autumn Chef® is currently the best tasting, large-fruited autumn raspberry we have bred. The fruits weigh up to 5 g, they are very large, the colour is shiny light red and the shape is conical with a round tip. Basically Autumn Chef® is an autumn raspberry, meaning that is bear fruit on this year's canes. The harvest starts rather late, only at the beginning of August to 10 August. What makes Autumn Chef® so special, however, is its distinct summer harvesting ability: on last year's rather late-growing canes, it can produce a large and, above all, qualitatively excellent early harvest in June, which overshadows all of the early summer raspberry varieties. Last but not least, Autumn Chef® - and this is what the name alludes to – is an excellent tasting variety, with lots of sugar and acidity; the icing on the cake, however, is the raspberry fragrance perceived through the nose after consumption, which sometimes even seems to release a hint of vanilla.

The advantages of the Autumn Raspberry Autumn Chef®

  • One of the best autumn raspberries in terms of size, colour and above all, flavour
  • Also provides an excellent, early harvest on last year's canes
  • Planted together with Summer Chef® there are four months of raspberry enjoyment for your garden

The combination with Summer Chef®

Autumn Chef® can be combined with Summer Chef® but it doesn’t have to be. Of course Autumn Chef® can also be planted alone – the variety offers more than enough advantages on its own. But you should also consider the additional advantages of a combined planting with Summer Chef®: a raspberry enjoyment that lasts for four months with one raspberry planting can be achieved, or in a single raspberry row of 3 m in length. The start of the harvest is provided by last year's Autumn Chef® raspberry canes (see below) and yes I know, that sounds a bit contradictory the first time...please just read on…Summer Chef® follows in July, and from the beginning of August into September Autumn Chef® takes over again with the traditional autumn harvest...

The autumn raspberry that bears fruit in early summer

We have already mentioned the Twotimer® ability of Autumn Chef®: last year's canes yield a remarkably large and above all qualitatively excellent harvest in June...However, we have also learned in our trials that Autumn Chef® should not be aimed at a long-term double yield, but that each year in rotation other Chef® autumn raspberry plants should be selectively cut for an early summer yield, i.e. 3-4 canes grown last year per plant should be left standing, which then turn June into a raspberry month.

Pruning the autumn raspberry Autumn Chef®

Basically, Autumn Chef® should be pruned in February/March by cutting all of the canes to ground level in order to promote concentrated and early August and September yields on the new canes. However, for larger plantings of five or more Autumn Chef®, other individual plants such as summer raspberries can also be cut back each year by deliberately leaving 2-4 of last year's canes per plant, especially those that have grown rather late, only cutting off the tips that have already bore fruit.

Short description of the Primeberry® Autumn Chef®

Maturity/harvest: On this year's canes from around 10th August until the end of September; on last year's canes that were selectively left in June, usually from around 10-15 June
Fruits: Fruits weigh up to 5 g, are beautifully light red, very firm for an aromatic raspberry (crisp is perhaps the wrong word, but you can feel the bite and the suddenly leaking juice...). The fruits are round to conical in shape, with medium-sized single fruits (drupelets), round ending at the top. The fruits detach from the cone very well in summer and also in autumn.
Shelf life/freezing: Autumn Chef® is one of the very few raspberry varieties that can be kept fresh for 2-3 days in the refrigerator, especially if it is deliberately picked when they have a relatively light colour; Autumn Chef® is also particularly suitable for freezing, as the fruit skin can withstand freezing and thawing relatively well.
Growth: Healthy, medium vigorous growth, which, however, bends under the load of the autumn harvest; therefore a classic raspberry framework is also necessary; few thorns, which are mainly found at the base of the shoots
Pruning: In February/March, remove all of the shoots to ground level; if a June harvest is desired, 3-4 last year's shoots should be left on individual plants, which change from year to year – if possible, the medium-strongest and latest shoots
  • Ripeness/Harvest Period August, September
  • Available February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November
  • Leaf Colour green
  • Lubera Breeding This plant was bred by Lubera in Switzerland and placed on the market after extensive testing at our facilities in Buchs (CH) and Bad Zwischenahn (D). In 20 years of work, Lubera's founder and breeder Markus Kobelt has bred more than 80 of his own new varieties for the home garden; they all have the goal of providing you, our customers, with more experience and flavour, easier growing and more resistant, more robust varieties.
