Product information "Mini Apple Tree Maloni® 'Winzling'®"

The dwarf apple tree Maloni® Winzling® grows only about 120-130 cm high; it forms a beautifully branched apple tree crown in miniature format without any pruning or training. In total, Maloni® Winzling® reaches about 30-40% of the volume of a normal apple tree. The beautifully pink-coloured, small to medium-sized, slightly high-built and conical fruits offer an excellent aroma, which combines the dominant refreshing acidity with sufficient sugar. The fruits are ripe from the middle to the end of September and can be left on the tree until October and enjoyed one after the other. Maloni® Winzling® is perfectly suited for growing in pots on a balcony or terrace, but it also looks good in a mixed border, paired with completely different plants, i.e. perennials and small trees, which seem strange at first sight. Even in the smallest garden this little tree finds its place.

The advantages of the apple tree Maloni® Winzling®

  • Super compact, bushy growth, naturally branching
  • Aromatic, refreshing fruit, not challenged by any disease, scab resistant
  • For container cultivation and mixed plantings

The difference between Maloni® and Malini®

What makes the difference between Malini® and Maloni®? Malini® apple trees have columnar growth, form (almost) no side shoots and reach a height of 150 cm (Malini® Gracilis® and 350 cm (Malini® Topmodel®) after 8 to 10 years, depending on the variety. In contrast, Maloni® apple trees grow compact and bushy; their reduced growth is due to the short leaf spacing, but also to a slow, early terminated growth. In contrast to the Malini® apple trees, the Maloni® apple trees like to branch by nature and form a miniature apple tree even without training and pruning.

Maloni® Winzling® in the Maloni® range

After the first generation of Maloni®, Sally® and Lilly®, now follows the second generation of these exclusive dwarf apples with Winzling® and Gulliver®. The new varieties grow even more compact than Sally® and Lilly®: Gullivers® remains at approx. 1 m, Winzling® grows to a height of 110-130 cm, while Sally and Lilly reach approx. 150-170 cm (grafted on M9 rootstocks). The two newer varieties, which are the result of a cross between Sally® and Lilly®, also grow somewhat bushier than the parent varieties and, like them, are scab-resistant and mildew-tolerant. Sally® and Lilly® are also suitable as solitary plants in the garden, while Maloni® Gullivers® and Winzling® are more suitable for growing in pots and mixed plantings due to their even more compact growth.

Where does the compact, dwarf growth come from?

The compact but bushy dwarfism was discovered in the Lubera® breeding programme and is due to a recessive dwarfism characteristic hidden in the scab-resistant variety Resi, which was bred by self-seeding. This dwarfism does not depend on a super-weak rootstock or a special cultivation method but is due to the genetically fixed characteristics of the variety itself.

Use and care

Maloni® Winzling® can be cultivated very easily in a pot on a balcony or terrace, just like its sister and parent varieties. Thanks to its naturally branching dwarfism, this variety also does surprisingly well in mixed plantings, e.g. it blooms first and then bears bright apples in a mixed border together with perennials and small trees. Due to its scab resistance and robustness, delicious fruits ripen even without a gardener's sweat and toil. The fruits can be picked and eaten from the little tree during a tour of the garden or as a reward for garden work. And if you still want to do something for your little apple tree, then thin out the many apples in June after a full flowering period and leave only 1-2 fruits per bunch of flowers. This helps the tree to develop enough flower buds for next year's harvest parallel to the fruit development.

Short description of the dwarf apple tree Maloni® Winzling®

Fruits: Small to medium-sized, slightly high-built fruits with a beautiful, light red to pink colouring. On the tree and only slightly ripe, the fruits are slightly frosted, in the ripening period and also after the harvest they turn bright pink. The fruits can be stored until around Christmas (much better than their sister variety Maloni® Gullivers®), but most of them are usually eaten long before then...
Harvest: Mid to late September, the apples can be left hanging in October for the gardener's refreshment.
Flavour: The fine-celled fruit flesh is very crisp and juicy; while the sister variety Gullivers® has a rather sweet flavour, Winzling® has a refreshingly sour taste but is paired with enough sugar for full enjoyment.
Growth: Super compact, the tree grows to a height of approx. 130 cm; the good, natural branching is typical for Maloni® Winzling® as well as for its sister variety Malini® Gullivers®.
Resistance: Resistant to scab, low susceptibility to mildew.
