Product information "Redlove® Calypso®"

Redlove Calypso is our aromatic variety of our red-fleshed apples. The apples are dark red coloured on the inside, very firm and juicy. They can be picked around 20 September and stored until Christmas. The firmness stays during storage. Up until now it is our most aromatic Redlove. Scab resistant and less prone to mildew.
Form/appearance: Small to medium, round, slightly flat, 70% dark red
Texture/firmness: Very firm, fine-celled, juicy, stays firm when stored
Flavour/aroma: The most aromatic Redlove to date (the Cox among the Redloves); after 2 - 3 weeks of ripening in storage, there is a strong first impression of fructose, then aromatic with sourness and flavour
Growth/health: Weak to medium strong, good branching, scab resistant
Harvest/maturity/storage: Harvest around 20 September, should be stored 1-3 weeks after harvest and then it develops its full flavour

Final size of bush: Height: 2-3 m, crown diameter: 1.2-2 m
Final size of espalier: Height: 2-3 m, length: 3 m
Final size of semi-standard: Stem height: 0,7-0,9m, crown height: 3-4 m, crown diameter: 3-4 m
What are Redloves®?
-the exclusive breeding by Lubera
-a new type of fruit beyond the apple
-the new flavour: refreshing with a hint of berry
-healthy, thanks to the red ingredients - anthocyanins
-beautiful, thanks to the pink flowers, red buds and red apples
-resistant to scab
Redloves® are the first good tasting, red-fleshed apples
Apple varieties. Wait, did I hear apple? No, actually the Redloves® are a new type of fruit that is just as distinguishable from the apple as nectarines and peaches or grapefruits and oranges. Although Redloves® look almost like normal apples from the outside, the skin’s fluorescent red colour already hints about the inside from the start; about the inside and other values of this new type of fruit. And this is what characterises the Redloves®:
Not only the red and sometimes pinkish red flesh, the wonderful markings in longitudinal and cross sections, but also a new aroma that is ultimately influenced by the red colouring agent and ingredients: a fresh fruitiness, with a hint of berry flavour, that characterises the sweet varieties. Beauty tastes good here...and is, thanks to the antioxidant colouring agent and ingredients that are several times more prevalent in the Redloves® than in apples, also healthy, too!

Redloves® are first of all, thanks to the sugar and the aroma, suitable for fresh enjoyment; in addition, there are also no limits to the imagination in the kitchen: from fruit salad to cake and slices of Redloves, fresh and cooked, up to red love-sauce (not oxidised) and dried Redlove® rings...Try it all! It’s a feast for the eyes and the palate!

Redlove calypso (Mechiel)

I live in Orkney Isles, wind is always part of our daily life. Do you think this apple is suitable for our climate? If not, do you have any recommendation? Thanks a lot.

Hi Mechiel, sorry for our late reply. I would take 'Era' or 'Circe', both are earlier and better vor northern climates. Best regards from Switzerland

Era and Calypso (Jeff Waltman)

Hello, Was thinking on adding 1 era 1 Calypso to my small garden. I live in Czech Republic and a nursery I frequent has them in Spindle. I read on M9 these should be supported at all times, is it necessary? Also, I assume in spindle form I can then prune these to go Espalier or prune to go normal apple shape? If I do the 2nd, would I cut these spindles at knee height to get them to branch up or what is best. I have searched your site and can find no videos on pruning these and I have red different opinion. Thank you Jeff

Pruning (Martin Edmundson)

I have a RedLove Calypso and Era that I bought last year and have fruited very nicely this year in the large pots I put them in. What is your advice about pruning, is it needed or not. Both varieties have a couple of largish lateral branches I can send pictures if needed.

Redlove calypso (Neil)

Hi there is the calypso redlove Apple self fertile or will I need anotjer variety to pollinate? Ps I have other apples on my allotment can I take pollen on a brush from there if it isn't? Thanks Regards Neil

Nov 3, 2016

Redlove calypso (Philipp Schneider)

Hi, the Redlove Calypso is self-sterile. But the Apple can be pollinated by almost every other apple. So the bees should pollinate them with the help of your other apple trees around.
With kind regards, Philipp Schneider. Lubera-Team.

Espalier Height (Robert)

Hi Please could you clarify the dimensions of the espalier? I'm seriously thinking of buying one but would like to know how tall and how wide the espalier is, and how much it's likely to grow. Many thanks Robert

Oct 27, 2015

Espalier Height (sonja dreher)

our espaliers are 1,7 meters high and one meter wide.
They can grow up to 2,5m, but can also be kept at a height of 2 m. It depends on how tall you want them to be.
The width can be up to 3m, or less, if you prune them.
It is mostly in your hand how you train the espalier.
