Product information "Apple Sternapi (Ornamental Apple)"

Harvest: Mid to late October, very late
Fruit: Small, flat, marked with 5, more or less edges
Flavour: Well, it is not to be compared with modern apples, but provides the thrill of eating what was eaten 2000 years ago; rather for use as a decorative apple,  e.g. at Christmas on the tree
Growth/health: Medium strong, can get some scab
History and origin: The oldest record comes from the first pomologist Jean Bauhin (1541-1613), who spoke of Pomum  pentagonum, a five star apple. According to Oliver de Serres (1539-1619), the “Pentagon apple” comes from the Roman period. In 1981, this historic cultivated apple was rediscovered by Roger Corbaz and brought back into cultivation
Old varieties for today
Old varieties are not valuable per se. They are often also “old” because new and better varieties came along – because soft and mealy apples no longer correspond to our current consumption habits (and the state of our teeth). But there are certainly varieties that do not have an authorisation today. Either by bringing in the current breeding new properties or, as our two varieties featured here that they are confusing and enchanting at the same time due to their special appearance. Schweizerhose and Sternapi are veritable fruits for decoration that you can also enjoy. We have these very old varieties grafted onto weak-growing rootstocks so that they can be cultivated in small gardens.
