Product information "Ornamental Apple 'Golden Hornet'"

After the white flowers of the pink flower buds have blossomed, the fruits appear. The yellow apples are produced in large numbers and they stay on the tree until the first frost.

Picturesque growth

The 'Golden Hornet' ornamental apple grows into a 4 m high shrub or small tree with dense, funnel-shaped growth. In old age, overhanging, lateral shoots form and therefore a very picturesque growth develops. In May, white, simple flowers form from the pink buds. The ornamental apple 'Golden Hornet' transform during flowering into a white blossoming spectacle. Not only because of the beautiful flowers is this ornamental apple also popular with fruit growers; because of the large amount of pollen it produces it is the ideal pollinator for non-self-fertile apples.

Appearance of the 'Golden Hornet'

After flowering the fruits are formed, which have given this ornament apple its name 'Golden Hornet'. The apples are golden yellow; they have the typical apple shape and they are up to 3 cm in size. Similar to the way hornets appear in droves, the 'Golden Hornet' variety also appears in very large numbers. The fruits remain attached to the plant for a long time, but they are damaged during the first frosts. They become brown and finally fall off the tree. As with all ornamental apples, the fruits and flowers are very popular in the animal kingdom and are a source of food for many species of animals. Humans can also use the fruits; they taste sweet. However, the effort is usually too big for the small yield. It is ideal to use the plant as a cut flower; the branches can be cut before flowering and they blossom wonderfully in a vase. In autumn, the branches with the many fruits are also a beautiful decoration.

Pruning promotes flowering

This ornamental apple needs a sunny or partially shaded spot with normal garden soil. In order to rejuvenate the plant it should be regularly thinned out in early spring. With very beautiful spring blooms and thanks to the decorative fruits, which stay on the plant up until the first frost, Malus 'Golden Hornet' an ideal ornamental shrub, which can be integrated both in groups or as a wild fruit hedge.
