Product information "Satsuma Mandarin"

The Satsuma mandarin, botanically called Citrus unshiu, comes from southern Japan and is often confused with the clementine, because both species are largely seedless. In contrast to clementine, the Satsuma mandarin is said to have originated from the crossbreeding of two varieties of mandarin oranges – and therefore does not represent its true own citrus species. The differences between individual Satsuma variants are then attributed to mutations over the long, hundreds of years of continuous propagation.
 
The benefits of Satsuma Mandarin are obvious:
 
  • The thin peel is very easy to peel, similar to clementines
  • Satsuma mandarins do not have seeds, at least almost none
  • Gigantic yield, not infrequently the fruits grow in real clusters
  • Sweet taste, low acidity
 
Frost tolerance and the sweet taste of Satsuma mandarins
 
The Satsuma mandarins are also said to have a greater frost tolerance. Although this is certainly the case with the standard varieties and such a Satsuma mandarin sometimes tolerates a few days or hours of frost; but it is still a long way from real, sustainable winter frost tolerance. However, there are special selections that are significantly more robust.
 
Whether one prefers clementines, tangerines, Mediterranean mandarins or Satsuma mandarins, is certainly a matter of taste. But one thing must be emphasised: unlike the other similar and comparable fruit types, the Satsuma mandarin is clearly the sweetest. It's not just the sugar, but also the substantial absence of acid. Therefore those who are very fond of sweetness and who shiver at the taste of fruit acid are sure to enjoy the Satsuma mandarins. It is known that Asians usually do not like any or almost no acid, and of course they have also selected their preferred citrus varieties.
