Product information "Gustissimo® Early Dark"

Very large and dark – this is how to best describe the fruit of the garden fig Gustissimo® Early Dark. The word “early” must be noted because there are not many fig varieties that deliver a great part of their yields in September. It is therefore worthwhile to plant this variety from our Gustissimo (R) series in a location that is less than ideal for figs where many other varieties will no longer ripen.
As always, this variety has been tested by the fig specialist Gusti Berchtold in the Chur Rhine Valley with regard to its winter hardiness, yield stability, time of harvest and fruit quality, and then it was selected for us.
Maturity: Early
Fruits: Juicy, very large, purple fruit, medium yield, also suitable for growing in pots
Growth: Frost resistant, medium growth

Gustissimo® Figs: Growing outdoors
• Mild location, sheltered from winter breezes
• Full sun if possible
• Humus soil, otherwise improve soil
• Can be planted throughout the entire year; when planting in autumn, attach double winter protection during the first winter

Gustissimo® Figs: Growing in containers
• Grow in a 12-15 litre container for 1-2 years
• After 1-2 years, replant it in a container with a volume of 50 L or more
• Repot the plant every 3 years in a container with 20-30% more volume or reduce the crown and root system by 30% and fill the pot again with fresh substrate
• In the summer, figs are relatively thirsty; the large leaves evaporate a lot of water

Tips

What to do if the fig gets frozen back in a cold winter? Do nothing at all. Just wait. Younger figs, which have not been at the location for more than 3 years, or in an extraordinarily cold year and sometimes even older fig bushes, can freeze back. However, the plant is still not lost. In 90% of the cases the fig regenerates itself again from the rootstock. Patience is required and sometimes the first, new shoots sprout again in June.
