Product information "Mulberry 'Illinois Everbearing'"
Mulberry ‘Illinois’ has very large fruits that range in colour from red to black. Its sweet, tart flavour makes it an ideal mulberry for eating fresh. The fruit can also be used to make pies and fruit salads. The tree is extremely productive with good hardiness and features beautiful, heart-shaped leaves. One caution with mulberries is not to plant them next to a patio or terrace because the fallen fruit will stain.
Fruits: Large fruit up to 4 cm, red, ripens to black
Maturity: July-September, ripe fruit almost all summer long
Fertilisation: Self-fertile
Flavour: Aromatic, very sweet
Growth: Very hardy, begins to bear fruit early and can be kept compact by pruning to 3 m. This does not harm the fruit yield; grows up to 5 m when not pruned
Winter protection for pomegranates & mulberries
Young wood may freeze back even on new pomegranate varieties and the zigzag mulberry. It is therefore appropriate to consistently protect the plants during the first 3 years by covering the shrubs planted out over the winter with insulating material. Thicker wood is then more resistant, just like figs. In addition, it is worth it, especially for garden pomegranates, to plant in a very mild location, e.g. against a house wall. The zigzag mulberry survived without problems during the last very cold winter in 2011/2012 - even our newly planted shrubs.
