Product information "Heartnut Heartbreaker"

For years, we have been wondering why heartnuts, with their wonderfully inviting heart shape, are not more widespread in Europe for presents or puns. Cultivating them is not any more difficult than the common walnut. The most sensitive issue is the late frost, but this can be avoided with proper site selection. We will be able to offer the first grafted heartnuts in large quantities starting this summer! We have chosen the word “grafted” wisely: Heartnut seedlings often do not show the desired heart shape, but they develop the oval nuts of the parent species, the Japanese walnut! So therefore only plant grafted varieties, not seedlings!
Fruits: Medium to large, up to 5 cm, can easily be cracked, the kernels come as halved portions out of the shell
Flowers: Strikingly beautiful, yellow-green catkins in spring; slightly later flowering, therefore good, late frost resistance
Pollination: Self-fertile, when planting two varieties, the reliability of the yield is higher
Growth: Very strong growth, wider than common walnuts, no disease known; the yield begins after 1-3 years, which is faster than common walnuts
Maturity: End of September
Flavour: Very good, many say that heartnuts are sweeter than common walnuts, they are less nutty, but also finer, softer, juicier and less bitter
Breeder: Doug Campbell, Canada
Synonym: Campbells CW1

prune to smaller hieght (Lubera)

Hi Ilana, no that is not possible. If you cut the plant so hard to keep it small, you’ll never see fruits.
