Product information "Pear Schweizerhose (Ornamental Pear)"

Harvest: Ripens relatively late (mid-October), consecutive maturity; harvest on time, as this can lead to premature fruit drop. Can be stored until about the end of the year; like many varieties, more prone to variable yields (alternation: one year a lot, in the following year little fruit)
Fruits: An eating pear with a good taste; the size can vary greatly; with beautiful longitudinal stripes
Flavour: Fine; significantly better in good growing areas (with mild climate)
Growth: Robust, medium to strong, calms down with age; somewhat loosely branched
History and origin: As early as the 17th century, a French pomologist mentioned Swiss pears with red, green and yellow strips which could be eaten until January. It may well have been the variety Schweizerhose, which is also relatively late maturing, easy to store and needs a mild climate with a beautiful autumn to produce good quality fruit. In the 19th century, this striped variety had also been mentioned several times, however, we assume it had to do with a mutation of a long, green, earlier ripening autumn pear. This is certain: the variety Schweizerhose has been haunting orchards for almost 400 years!

Old varieties for today
Old varieties are not valuable per se. They are often also “old” because new and better varieties came along – because soft and mealy apples no longer correspond to our current consumption habits (and the state of our teeth). But there are certainly varieties that do not have an authorisation today. Either by bringing in the current breeding new properties or, as our two varieties featured here that they are confusing and enchanting at the same time due to their special appearance. Schweizerhose and Sternapi are veritable fruits for decoration that you can also enjoy. We have these very old varieties grafted onto weak-growing rootstocks so that they can be cultivated in small gardens.
