Product information "Robusticot® Vesuviana Rossa"

The Vesuvian Robusticot® has the most beautiful red colour of all the Robusticots®. At the time of maturity, the relatively large, up to 30-35 g fruits have a wonderful, dark red colour: a warm red, somewhat dampened by the velvety fruit skin, which has a very fine hairy structure like the skin of an apricot. The shape of the fruit is roundish, sometimes very slightly high-built, with a hint of an apricot groove, however this is almost unrecognisable.
As with all Robusticots®, the visual recognition of the fruit ripeness is relatively difficult. A first and most important indication is certain, if the yellow-red of the fruit turns to a dark red colour, then soon the fruit will slightly give way to the pressure of the thumb (meaning it is then ready to eat) and approximately one week later the fruits will likely fall to the ground. We recommend harvesting the fruits for fresh enjoyment a few days after the colour changes to dark red, and at best the fruit should be left to ripen in the fruit bowl. If you would like to process the fruits, you can also shake the tree when 2/3 of the fruits are dark red in colour. If you put plastic or a cloth/blanket under the tree, the fruits can be collected easily.

Origin of Robusticot® Vesuviana Rossa

The Robusticot® Vesuviana Rossa is an ancient Italian variety that has been cultivated as Biricoccolo for centuries in Italy, in the Vesuvius area and in the Bologna area. We tested several Italian Biricoccoli strains and compared them to our breeding based on Eastern European black apricots. Basically, the Italian origins are rather larger and have a lighter, redder colour, while the Eastern European genetics is dark and usually slightly smaller.

Flavour and use

The taste of a ripe Robusticot® Vesuviana Rossa is excellent and introduces a new flavour component among the Robusticots®: in addition to cherry plum and apricot, the peach flavour appears prominently, which almost dominates the aroma of the ripe fruit. This Robusticot® is also very suitable as a snack fruit, but can of course also be used for jams, jellies and other recipes. Especially the jam, made with as little sugar as possible, brings out the fine and unique aroma with hints of peach extremely well.
