Product information "Red Elderberry 'Anna'"

The native Sambucus racemosa 'Anna' forms large, yellowish flowers. This results in bright red fruits.

Native ornamental plant with useful value
The red elderberry does not bear its name because of its red leaves – it is the fruits that give this native ornamental plant its name. The scarlet fruits appear in July and August and are inedible when raw. The seeds are poisonous! The fruit pulp, however, can be used like that of the black elderberry and processed into jams and juices. However, the infructescences of the red elderberry are smaller than those of the black elderberry. The fruits develop from yellow flowers which appear in April and May at last year's shoots. The flowers are very popular with nectar-loving insects while the fruits are used as food by many species of birds. This plant grows up to 3 m high and 2 m wide; the main shoots are upright while the side branches are slightly overhanging, giving the shrub a picturesque appearance.

Also as an underplanting of trees

Sambucus racemosa is quite undemanding and thrives best in the shade, but also tolerates sunny locations. The soil should contain little lime; it should be nutritious and fresh to moist, however this plant is very adaptable and also thrives in nutrient-poor soils. This native plant can be used very well in groups or as an individual plant. As a typical plant at the edge of a forest one can use the red elderberry as an underplanting of trees or large shrubs. Due to its extensive root system, the plant can also be used to stabilise slopes.

Regular pruning for many fruits
In order to obtain a strong formation of fruits, the elderberry should be regularly pruned. Pruning is best carried out after the harvest in August. The harvested shoots should be strongly trimmed (cut away up to 2/3) and 10-12 strong shoots should be left for the following year. The shoots for the following year should be as close as possible to the base of the shrub so that the elderberry remains compact.
