Product information "Tea Plant Fresh-T®"

The tea plant Fresh-T® is the best selection for growing in northern gardens, in Western Europe and in England. In many years of tests at Lubera in Switzerland and in northern Germany it has shown the best adaptation to the northern climate. In addition, the fresh green tea made from Fresh-T®, but also the fresh tea variants using the shoot tips, old leaves or even flowers, has a fantastic quality that you can never experience with purchased tea.

Benefits of the tea plant Fresh-T®

- Average winter hardiness down to -15°C when the roots are protected with insulating material
- Beautiful and healthy growth
- Suitable for aromatic green teas and fresh tea infusions
- A fine-scented tea can also be obtained from the flowers

Growth of the common tea shrub Fresh-T®

Fresh-T® grows bushy and well-branched. It forms a shrub with a diameter of 1 m in about five years, which can be pruned to a round shape or other form depending on the harvesting method. Before the plant sprouts in the spring, the tea plant can be cut back slightly at the top, promoting the branching and thus the harvest of the young, developing shoot tips in late spring or early summer.

Requirements of the tea plant Fresh-T®

The tea plant Fresh-T® must be planted in acidic soil, in a bog bed or in a container filled with acidifying soil. The soil should drain well and that plant should be ideally situated in a partially shaded location without the risk of spring frosts. This tea plant loves high humidity, and so especially when grown in containers, it important to provide the plant with a somewhat protected, partially shaded location that is never in full sun.

Fertilising the tea plant Fresh-T®

When planted in containers, apply 30 g of slow release fertiliser (Frutilizer Seasonal Fertiliser Plus) per 5 L of soil volume in March. If the container has a volume of 50 L or more, the fertiliser can be reduced by 30%. In March, if the tea plant has been planted out (in a bog bed), between 150 g and 250 g of slow-release fertiliser should be slightly incorporated in a 50 cm to 100 cm radius around the plant. This specification is per tea plant and year and depending on the size of the plant.

Why did we choose the name Fresh-T® for the common tea plant from Lubera® breeding?

We have learned in the last few years from our tea trials that the infusion and fermentation of tea leaves for black tea alters the aroma beyond recognition; even with green tea, with the only short maturation (withering) of the leaves, we are much closer to the original, fine, fresh herbal tea aroma with a slightly bitter aftertaste. In your own garden, the tea is so to speak fresh twice: the tea shrub is right there; it only needs to be picked, and we have the possibility to also enjoy the fresh leaves and flowers. Let's take a look at it this way: all of the complicated processing options of the tea were first and foremost created so that it became storable and could also be transported and traded. Of course one made a virtue of necessity and with the processing new aroma options (fermentation) cam about. But the most original tea is the fresh tea – Fresh-T® is the plant, from now on available for your garden. This selection, obtained from a Korean tea population, does not only have good winter hardiness but it is also the best for fresh tea – made from fresh leaves.
