Product information "Mini Pear Pironi® Little Sweety®"

This Pironi variety was also christened in England - on the proposal from the readers of the English newspaper The Sun. Well, the name may not be very original, but it pretty much describes the properties of the green Pironi variety that has the best quality of all the known compact pear varieties. No wonder that Comice, Conference and Packhams are its ancestors...

With the Pironis, we introduce two compact growing pear varieties, which can be grafted to pear seedling; they grow will in any soil, they are extremely fruitful and only grow 150 cm high in 25 years. Both species go back to a French great-grandmother from the 19th century (Nain vert; or nain a bois monstrueux). Incidentally, in the last two breeding generations, Conference, Comice and Packhams Triumph have been crossbred, which now contribute to the excellent fruit quality of the Pironis.

Fruits: Striking green, turn yellow only when overripe; small to medium, depending on the fruit set
Texture: Can be eaten crisp, then already sweet; pear lovers eat this pear softend
Flavour: Pear flavour with some bergamot; fine skin
Growth: Compact, bushy, slightly stronger apical dominance than Pironi # 3, only grows  150-170 cm
high in 20-25 years
Harvest/maturity: Ready to be picked in mid-September; after storage and an additional 3-4 days of warm storage, they are a melting enjoyment until the end of December. If you leave them hanging on the tree, they have a melting texture from mid to late October

Tips

Pironi® for every soil and for any location   While normal growing pears must be grafted onto quince rootstocks in order to keep the growth to 3m +, Pironi® can easily be grafted to pear young plants (which basically provide stronger growth). Even in this combination, Pironi® will only grow 150 cm high in 20 years…in contrast, in order to grow a tree reasonably quickly, the pear rootstock is clearly beneficial. And it has another advantage: pears on pear roots grow in any soil, and they are absolutely frost-resistant, while quince roots show problems in chalky soil and they are also much more susceptible to frost.

Little Sweety (Tim)

Hello there, I wonder if you tell me if this pear would need any pruning at all? And is it possible to train it in any way (stepover, fan or other ways) rather than just let it grow naturally? Many thanks Tim
