Product information "Cassissima® Black Marble"

Cassissima® Black Marble® is the largest black currant from Lubera and worldwide one of the largest, if not the largest black currant. The fruit size, the associated juiciness, the better ratio between fruit flesh and seeds/skin lead to a whole new eating experience. The cassis variety is harvested and automatically enjoyed not as a cluster, but as sweet and aromatic, single fruit for snacking. 'Black Marble' is very healthy and has quite vigorous growth; it is also resistant to mildew. Many visitors in our breeding fields have asked me in the last years if this variety is a jostaberry, a cross between a black currant and a gooseberry. No, 'Black Marble' is not.
Cassissima 'Black Marble' is a pure-bred black currant, just simply with much bigger fruits. It was produced from the free-flowering seeds of a Russian variety. And, while speaking of it, here are the most important differences to the jostaberry: jostaberries always have gigantic growth, and a poor yield when compared with this; 'Black Marble' is very rich-bearing and the fruits do not have this boring, “neither fish nor bird” character like the jostaberries, but they are clearly cassis, with a distinct cassis aroma, and they also have lots of sugar and juice, which then accounts for the eating quality.

Maturity: Very early, one of the earliest cassis varieties
Fruits: By far the largest cassis fruit in our assortment, and probably one of the largest, if not the largest black currant; on short clusters with 2 - 4 berries, well over 1 cm ø is possible
Harvest: The clusters are no longer harvested with this variety, but instead the single berries on the bush – and hopefully that there will be some berries left before they reach the long way to the kitchen or living room
Flavour: Sweetly well-balanced and juicy: here it is also worthwhile to eat berry after berry; one or two berries in the mouth are enough for experiencing the flavour; once the fruits are bitten into, the jelly-like fruit flesh is distributed in the mouth and on the palate without the feeling of the seeds and shows how round and fruity a black currant can taste
Growth/health: 'Black Marble' is very healthy growing; it is resistant to powdery mildew and the leaves do not drop. It has an appealing autumn colouration, however the leaf colouring is slightly lighter than in other varieties

Tips

Pruning blackcurrants In respect of blackcurrants, it is important to remove old woody shoots at ground level after 4-5 years; this creates air and energy, so that new shoots can develop that will provide the best fruit quality in the second to fourth years. By the way: 5 to 6 shoots are enough for a blackcurrant bush, to produce the best fruits!
