Product information "Jostaberry Jogusto® (Confi®Berry)"

Of all the Confi®Berries, the jostaberry Jogusto® ripens at the latest, only at the beginning of August. This is a very welcome change in the harvest time, as almost all other bush berries are ripe in June and July. Jogusto's growth is much closer to the older jostaberry varieties, rather vigorous, 170-180 cm, with almost the same width. This means that Jogusto® can also be used as a hedge plant or in a mixed berry or wild fruit hedge. Nevertheless, this variety also brings a significant improvement in the fertility compared to older varieties.

Advantages of the Confi®Berry Jogusto®

  • Late maturity, not until the beginning of August
  • Large to very large berries on beautiful, compact clusters
  • Ideal for processing, for jams, jellies, smoothies

Pruning the Jostaberry Jogusto®

Jogusto® also bears an abundant amount of fruit on perennial and older wood. It renews itself more with longer shoots than with short fruiting wood. As with Jodeli®, we recommend leaving the shrub relatively dense (partly because of sunburn in the summer). It does not need to be pruned in the first three to four years, but then 1-2 old main branches should be removed completely every year. Here, because of its ability to renew itself well at the base, it can be pruned back to this level.

Short description of the Confi®Berry Jogusto®

Growth: Vigorous, approx. 170-180 cm high, almost equally wide, very healthy growing
Resistance: No leaf fall, almost never any powdery mildew; can be cultivated absolutely without pesticides.
Maturity:
Late, towards the end of August; however, the fruits invite to be eaten much earlier, around the beginning of July, but then they are still much too red, with too much sourness, much too unripe. So patience is required for this variety – the ideal time for picking is when the colour is almost black.
Harvest: In this late variety, ripening is not quite as uniform as in the early Confi®Berry Jodeli®. However, since the fruits of Jogusto® are mostly used for processing, you can proceed as follows: as soon as half or two-thirds of the fruit is fully ripe and almost black, you can harvest the entire shrub. Unripe or barely ripe jostaberries have a higher pectin content than ripe ones (jostaberries generally have the highest pectin content of all berries) and thus help to boil the fruits down to jams and jellies.
Berries/clusters: The berries are large to very large, up to 1.8 cm; nevertheless they hang on actually quite beautiful, even if compact clusters.
Flavour: Sour and refreshing; it is important to wait for the harvest with a majority of really ripe fruit, even if there is more sugar in the fruit. Nevertheless, this variety is particularly suitable for processing, for jams, jellies, smoothies. Jogusto®, like other Confi®Berries, is very suited for freezing.
Training/pruning: In order to achieve a dense shrub, the plant should not be pruned in the first 3-4 years; then regularly remove individual shoots completely in order to promote basal rejuvenation. Like Jodeli®, Jogusto® also bears fruit very intensively on 3-year-old and older wood, so that a Jogusto® shrub can survive for a few years without cutting. Due to the strong growth, training the shrub on a trellis is also possible: select three main branches (cut back the rest to ground level) and tie to a trellis in a fan-like manner. The side shoots of these main branches are then expected to bear fruit for 2-3 years, after which they should be cut back to stubs in order to generate new fruiting wood.
