Product information "Ornamental Sweet Potato Treasure Island 'Makatea'"

The ornamental sweet potato variety Treasure Island 'Makatea'Ⓢ is characterised by its very abundant growth. It climbs (or hangs) and is therefore particularly suitable for window boxes or as a screen on balconies and terraces. The sweet potato 'Makatea' can also climb up a garden fence, pergola or other trellis. Alternatively, the lush Treasure Island 'Makatea' leaf tendrils can be used as ground cover in a perennial bed or vegetable garden. The decorative leaves of this sweet potato are heart-shaped and they have a fresh, slight green colour that looks almost golden in the sun. They taste very good in salads. The white-fleshed tubers of the sweet potato Treasure Island 'Makatea' are mainly used for baking and frying or for mashed sweet potatoes and for various Caribbean recipes.

Here are the advantages of the sweet potato variety 'Makatea':

  •     Strong growth, which can be used for climbing or for ground covering or hanging effects (in a hanging basket)
  •     Light green to yellow leaves, especially tasty in salad
  •     The only white-fleshed variety in the Treasure Island range, ideal for frying

Are the leaves of the sweet potatoes edible?

The leaves of the sweet potatoes are also used for cooking and as food in the areas of origin of Ipomea batatas. Of course, this is now also true for the varieties in the Treasure Island series that have double uses, whose leaves are highly ornamental but not less suitable for eating...On the contrary: if it's true that the eye is attracted to them, then the Treasure Island varieties are particularly satisfying because the light green, almost bright colour combined with the heart shape of the leaves is really beautiful. We think that this variety is particularly suitable for salads because of the fine and light leaves, and with the dark leaves of other varieties you should also try cooking it like spinach; here the pleasure and nutritional value is added to the health value through the high content of anthocyanins.
Now how many leaves can be harvested without a loss of tuber development? As a rough guide, one could say that, especially from the end of July into the autumn months, up to 10 or even 15 leaves can be harvested from each shoot, especially with a very vigorous variety like 'Makatea'. Before the tubers are harvested, i.e. from mid-September onwards, the shoot tips can also be harvested regularly, as they no longer represent a large net gain for the energy balance of the plant – shoot growth at the end of the growing season consumes more energy than it produces...

Short description of the sweet potato 'Makatea':

Vegetation period: 'Makatea' needs about 120-130 days until harvest
Growth/health: Good resistance to both nematodes and soil-borne diseases, little insect and pest infestation, very vigorous growth
Location: This variety can thrive both in the sun and in slight partial shade
Yield: High
Tubers: Elongated, white, with beige skin
Taste/suitability: Sweet and pleasantly mild. Especially suitable for baking and frying. The 'Makatea' variety is also very suitable for mashed sweet potatoes. In addition, this sweet potato is often used for various Asian and Caribbean recipes.

Tips

Growing in a pot Pot cultivation is useful in a container with a volume of at least 7-10 L. Remember that it needs enough volume to allow the tubers to develop freely. In addition, when planting the young plants you should also take care to spread the roots well; otherwise the potted ring growth can lead to shapeless tubers.
