Product information "Blood Mandarin Orange 'Amoa 8'"

The blood mandarin orange 'Amoa 8' fills a gap in the citrus assortment: a mandarin orange or clementine that is consistently red inside and out. Dr. Russo of the Sicilian breeding institute Istituto sperimentale per Agrumicoltura in Acireale has achieved exactly this goal. From a cross of the Moro full-blooded sweet orange with the mandarin Avana, he was able to release this special variety in 2004, but it is still one of the rarities and specialities on the citrus market. The blood mandarin orange 'Amoa 8' is sometimes described as Tangor (this is a collective name, which is supposed to represent mandarin/sweet orange hybrids as a separate species, so to speak), some citrus specialists also count it as an orange. But the shape and taste of 'Amoa 8' clearly identify it as a mandarin type: the size is small, the shape is flat roundish, there is a slight nipple on the stem, on the opposite side it is flat. The somewhat rough, medium-thick to thick peel separates very easily from the flesh and the fruit segments can be easily divided - all this is quite mandarin-like. Accordingly, we have also decided here to place this hybrid variety in the mandarin orange category.
