The red watermelon 'Blacktail Mountain originates from North America and was specially selected for its suitability for growing in the northern periphery of melon cultivation. In the cultivation trials at Lubera, it also comes out on top, not in terms of pure yield, but all the more in terms of ripening time and fruit quality. In terms of yield, 'Black Mountain' lags behind somewhat, especially in caliber size. However, it seems that the slightly reduced fruit mass benefits the fruit quality. The medium-sized fruits are very refreshing, but at the same time surprisingly full-bodied. The sugar content never comes close to the concentration and intensity of the canteloupes, but remains unsurpassed among the watermelons. Although the red watermelon 'Blacktail Mountain' was explicitly selected for cultivation in the cold border area for melons and there also shines with exceptional fruit quality, it also tolerates heat waves and shorter dry periods above average.
