More information about fig trees - the Gustissimo® fig tree assortment
Fig trees from Lubera not only survive cold winters, but also large temperature differences. This makes the fig trees hardy and ideal for gardens throughout Europe. Gustissimo® fruit figs can easily compete in sweetness and yield with well-known fig tree varieties such as Brown Turkey or the Dalmatian fig. Whoever buys a fig tree, in particular, the Gustissimo® fig from Lubera can also be sure that it bears fruit. Gustissimo® figs are cultivated figs that pollinate themselves. Self-insemination is an important prerequisite for fig harvests in places where the fig wasp does not occur as a natural pollinator. The variety of our Gustissimo® figs is impressive and a good reason to buy a fig tree from Lubera. Each variety has its own special characteristics. Gustissimo® Negronne is the 'blue wonder' and produces blue-violet and very sweet fruits. Gustissimo® Morena brings quick harvests. Gustissimo® Dauphine provides an early harvest, in which the fruits are initially green-yellow, but turn red when ripe. It is one of the most productive figs and also suitable for colder locations. If you would like to buy a fig tree that is lighter coloured, Gustissimo® Amatrice Casale is a very good choice. It has medium-sized, white-green fruits and reliably produces high yields. The Early Dark develops particularly large, purple fruits with a medium growth height of the fig tree. Finally, Gustissimo® Isi d'Oro is particularly suitable for pot cultivation. It also produces aromatic fruits with red flesh.

The ideal care for the Gustissimo® fig tree
Luckily, when you buy a fig tree from Lubera, these fig trees are very robust and easy to care for, which makes maintaining them usually very easy.
The ideal location for a fig tree
After you buy a fig tree, it should be planted in a location with full sun that is mild and protected. Ideally, a south-facing wall in front of which the fig is planted is ideal. Depending on the material, the wall stores heat during the day and releases it at night. In this way, the temperature of the fig is higher on average and it can grow longer.
Planting a fig tree
As a plant with a high demand for nutrients, a fig requires a humus-rich soil. Before planting, the soil can be improved with an organic fertiliser such as horn shavings or manure. The fig trees from Lubera can be planted all year round. In the first winters, it is recommended to protect the young trees. From spring onwards, when budding has taken place, the figs need plenty of water. The harvest depends on the varieties, for which you can find more information on the product pages. Enjoy delicious figs from the Gustissimo series bred by Lubera. These figs are perfect for those who want to buy a fig tree.
Watering and fertilising fig trees
When a fig tree is planted out, it usually does not need watering because it gets the water directly from the soil. However, more frequent watering should be done immediately after planting. This facilitates rooting. If the fig tree grows in a container, regular watering is necessary. Through its large leaves, the fig tree evaporates considerable amounts of water, which it only gets in the container with a regular supply of water.
The most suitable fertiliser is Lubera’s Compound Fertiliser Plus, which provides the fig with all the important nutrients. Compound Fertiliser Plus is very productive and it is most sufficient if it is applied once in the spring. If the fig grows strongly and also bears fruit, it can be fertilised again in August.
Overwintering fig trees
In the case of planted figs, winter protection should be provided in the first winter after planting by adding layer of mulch and, if necessary, a fleece cover. Once the fig has established itself and is protected, winter protection is no longer necessary. If the fig grows in a container, it can be placed in a protected position. Only in places where it is very cold and minus temperatures in the clearly double-digit range are possible, the fig has to be overwintered cool and bright in an interior space. However, since it loses its leaves in autumn, a fig is very frugal in the winter, so that overwintering is easy.
Enjoying figs
Delicious figs are sweet and aromatic, for instance like our Gustissimo® Perretta. Figs can be eaten directly from the tree or used in fig recipes. A salad with figs and goat cheese is just as much a refined recipe as bacon-wrapped and fried figs. Many jam and dessert recipes call for figs – such as the famous fig and walnut jam. As you can see, there is no limit to the variety and delicious compositions using tasty figs. So take the time to look through our assortment of figs before you buy a fig tree that is right for you!
