Product information "American persimmon (Kaki Meader)"

The native, North American persimmon (kaki) was already very popular amongst the original inhabitants. The fact that many fruits of the naturally occurring plants still show a certain bitterness at maturity did not play a decisive role for the hunters and gatherers. However, very good tasting American persimmon trees have been selected and propagated in the United States since the 19th century. Meader is probably the best tasting selection with the largest fruits. When it is completely ripe, the 3-5 cm large fruits develop an intense, sweet and slightly caramelised taste that is hard to resist. But somehow, this is part of the fruit and what makes it appealing.

Maturity: October to November; it is worth it to harvest the fruits before or after the first frost and then let them ripen together with apples so that the astringency disappears
Fruits: Small, 3-5 cm, flat. The colour changes from green-yellow to yellow-orange as they ripen
Growth/spacing: The tree is very robust; it has no pests or diseases and can grow higher than 4 m; however, it bears much smaller fruit, from the 2nd year after planting and can also be kept slightly smaller; it has attractive yellow colouration in autumn
Pollination: Like almost all persimmon varieties, this variety is not self-fertile, but also sets parthenocarpic fruits without fertilisation, which then remain seedless
About Persimmons / Kaki
The persimmon varieties that are known from the supermarket are Japanese persimmon or Diospyros kaki. Diospyros means something like “jelly”. Japanese persimmon develops hand-large fruits that have a fine, melting texture when properly mature as well as a hint of vanilla and a caramel flavour. The trees should be protected in the first two years and then in most areas of Central Europe they are hardy to -15°C. The older the wood is, the better the winter hardiness. In our experiments, the winter hardiness is significantly better than figs, which means they have never frozen back in the past 10 years. The American persimmon (Diospyros virginiana) forms small, berry-like fruits that are 3-5 cm in diameter; the best variety Meader also develops a good flavour, but has to be fully ripe. American persimmons are absolutely hardy in our region and they withstand temperatures down to -25/30°C. Hybrids of the American persimmon and Japanese persimmon, such as Nikitas Gift, combine the best features of both of the subspecies: the good winter hardiness of the American persimmon and fruit quality of the Japanese persimmon.

American persimmon as a tree for the home The American persimmon in particular forms a naturally beautiful crown and due to its shiny and disease-free leaves, it is virtually the prime example of a tree for the home. The slightly larger stature of the American persimmon tree is no longer important and we almost forgot: as a bonus, there is yellow colouration and LOTS of fruit in autumn!
