Product information "Akebia quinata - Chocolate vine"

Akebia quinata 'Chocolate vine', also known as five leaf akebia, has compound leaves with five leaflets. It is a climbing plant that forms beautiful, violet flowers in May from which edible, cucumber-shaped fruits develop. This climber forms both male and female flowers. The female flowers are violet and have an interesting shape; the smaller male flowers are pink. The flowers are clustered and chocolate-scented.

This shrub of Asian origin (Japan, China and Korea) grows to approx. 6 m in height and is excellent for growing on arbours, trellises, pergolas or fences. It may take up to two years for the plant to establish itself and develop into a fast growing climbing plant.

'Chocolate vine' prefers a partially shaded location in the garden. The soil should be loamy and permeable with a high content of organic matter. This plant is adaptable and also grows in sandy, less moist soils.

Pruning can be done every 2-3 years in order to thin the plant out, however this is not necessarily required. If individual shoots are cut in early spring, the budding will be promoted in the basal region and bare spots will be prevented.

How easy is it to control? (Sonja Dreher)

Hello,
it has to be cut regularly so it does not get out of control.
It is very vigrous.
But if your country has it on a list of pest plants and it is prohibited, I would not buy one.
Here in EU countries it is not prohibited. But it is on the Warning list.
The good thing is, it seldomly making seeds in our climate.

kind regards

Akebia quinata (Michael Hirst)

I have read elsewhere that in order to ensure cropping it is necessary to have two varieties of the Chocolate Vine, in order that they cross pollinate - is this your experience with the variety you supply? Thank you

Akebia quinata (R Ludlow)

https://www.rhs.org.uk/Plants/747/Akebia-quinata/Details
says:
...flowers, followed by large, sausage-shaped fruits, if cross-pollinated by another clone
so yes, you or a close neighbour need another variety.

Does it taste like cocoa? (Esther)

Hello, Sorry if this is a stupid question, but why is this called "chocolate vine"? It's visibly not a cocoa plant. But does the taste remind you of cocoa? What is the taste like? Is it good raw? Is it better when cooked? Thanks in advance. E

"Akebia quinata - Chocolate vine (Sonja Hnedrischke)

Hello,

The fruits have a sweet, fruity taste.
They are suitable for fresh consumption or for the juice and jam production.
