Product information "Sea Buckthorn Pollmix 2 (male)"

Perhaps you know it already: to get a beautiful yield of sea buckthorn berries in the garden two plants are always needed. Namely, a female carrying the vitamin-rich fruits, and a male, which provides the necessary pollen. Such a pollinator variety is the sea buckthorn 'Pollmix 2'. Like all sea buckthorns, this variety also forms silvery-grey leaves, which often stay on the plant in the winter. Before the leaves sprout, the flowers appear; they are small and unimpressive. 'Pollmix 2' is an ideal pollinator for the female varieties Hergo, Frugana, Dorana and Askola and, of course, our Leikora variety; a male plant can pollinate approximately 6-10 female plants. The flowers and fruits are also very important for the animal kingdom: up to 40 species of birds feed on sea buckthorn.
Sea buckthorn wants a sunny location, the soil should be calcareous; it will endure everything from dry to moist soil. Sea buckthorn grows particularly well in sandy or pebbly soils. Mulching should be omitted since the plant should avoid humus. The plant is tolerant to heat and salt, so it can be used well in exposed areas in the city. Even frost is no problem for sea buckthorn. Even in "frost holes" reliable high yields are produced.
Pruning is well tolerated; it can also be done strongly if the plant has become too big. Hippophae rhamnoides 'Pollmix 2' is usually only used as a "secondary phenomenon" next to female sea buckthorns, but the male sea buckthorns also have attractive grey foliage. The plants look very beautiful in perennial beds or in combination with butterfly bushes, roses, lavender or Russian sage. You will see: the pollinator varieties must not only be seen as an annoying "companion" to the females, but they can also be integrated nicely into the garden.
