Product information "Chinese Fountain Bamboo 'Black Pearl'"

Black may not be an accurate description of this bamboo 'Black Pearl', which is a kind of black and white painting. It is rather colourful; its canes are coloured from dark red to dark purple to almost black. Depending on the sun's penetration, the colour composition also seems to change again and again. In addition, this bamboo is extremely hardy and is therefore also suitable for using in extremely cold areas down to -28°C.

Dark purple to black canes

The aforementioned iridescent colour splendor from purple to black is really the unique selling point of 'Black Pearl'. In sunny locations, the colours are dominant from dark red to black, while in shadier locations a bluish to violet colour results. The canes first grow upright and later overhang due to the dense foliage. The dainty leaves have a lush green colour, resulting in an appealing colour combination with the dark reddish canes. We will not be able to see a flower on this bamboo for the next 60-80 years, because the flowering rhythm of the bamboos is extremely slow; they bloomed in the 90s of the last century and they will not bloom again for the next 60-80 years. That's better since the bamboo plant die after they flower. The beautiful canes are close together and the intense foliage makes this bamboo very opaque. The Fargesia bamboo 'Black Pearl' can grow up to 4 m high. Since no rhizomes are formed, a rhizome barrier is not necessary for all Fargesias. By the way, the delicate young shoots of bamboos are popular ingredients for Asian cuisine.

Plant in the sun only in cool areas

In cooler areas in northern Germany, a sunny location can be chosen, but if the location is too hot, Fargesia nitida 'Black Pearl' does not do well. Therefore, in warmer and drier areas, such as in Switzerland, a partially shady to shady location is preferable. In cooler locations, the Chinese fountain bamboo 'Black Pearl' will develop more upright, since the canes harden faster. The soil should be nutrient-rich and loose.

Extremely hardy to -28°C

This bamboo is very tolerant to pruning and is therefore ideal as a hedge plant. This Chinese fountain bamboo can also be used wonderfully as a solitary plant and in containers. The darkly coloored shoots in combination with light-leaved bamboos are especially beautiful. As a container plant, care must be taken during the winter to ensure a sufficient water supply. The plant can be watered on frost-free days; a location in full sun should be avoided when used as a container plant. This bamboo is extremely hardy to -28°C.
