Product information "Giant Umbrella Bamboo 'Jonnys Gigant'®"

The gigantic umbrella bamboo 'Jonnys Gigant' grows up to 4 m high; the green canes are close together and become reddish in the sun.

A root barrier is not needed

Bamboo is not for everyone; it is too exotic and does not fit well with the native plants or it spreads too vigorously. Once you have a bamboo in your garden, the entire neighborhood will soon have it, too. I cannot invalidate the first argument; there are too many different individual tastes. But the second argument I gladly accept. Bamboo is not simply bamboo. There are over 100 different genera and even more varieties; they are spread throughout different temperate zones and in the subtropics and tropics, some growing woody or herbaceous. And they form runner or also not! The Fargesias, to which the variety 'Jonnys Gigant' belongs, does not form runners. The size of the root ball gets only slightly larger each year until it reaches a diameter of 2 m. This plant can thus be easily planted in the garden, without having to install an elaborate root barrier.

Vigorous and ornamental

Fargesia murielae 'Jonnys Gigant' is vigorous and it forms 4 m high, green stalks. The tops of this bamboo variety are often slightly reddish and overhang in an arch-like manner. The shadier the plant’s location, the more upright is the growth. The canes are close together and are covered with dark green, slightly twisted leaves. The leaves are wintergreen, meaning that they stay on the plant during the winter. This bamboo can be easily cut. This allows you to always have enough bamboo canes ready for the garden and other purposes. A hedge trimmer can also be used for pruning a bamboo hedge. To keep the clump smaller, you can regularly cut pieces. And finally, the young, delicate sprouts can also be used in the kitchen.

The giant umbrella bamboo 'Jonnys Gigant' loves loose, humid soil and a semi-shaded location. Sun is well tolerated at a location with that has high humidity and a good water supply. Due to the dense growth and the wintergreen leaves, 'Jonnys Gigant' is well suited as a privacy screen, which also persists in the winter. Otherwise, this bamboo can also be planted in small groups or a single position.

Mysterious flowering

Bamboo flowers are still puzzling. They are formed only every 80-130 years. Then all of the bamboos of a species bloom at the same time. After flowering, most bamboos die, as the plants expend their energy through their flowers. Death can hardly be counteracted. In part, there are indications that the plant can be radically cut back and given a lot of fertiliser in order to counteract the death. But this is usually not successful. Fortunately, the last flowering of the Fargesias took place shortly before the turn of the millennium. No bloom is expected for at least the next 60 to 80 years.
