Product information "Bamboo 'Viking'"

Bamboo 'Viking' is characterised by it vital and vigorous growth. Heights of 4 m can already be reached in the 4th year; this is how vigorous the Fargesia hybrid 'Viking' is. The thick, green canes take on a reddish colour in the sun.

No rhizomes

The bamboo 'Viking' is one of the fastest growing Fargesia hybrids; in the 4th year, heights of 4 m can already be reached. The dense clumps have a green base colour and are slightly red in the sun. The wintergreen leaves are elongated; in a partially shaded site they have a rich green colour and in a location with too much sun the leaves also take on a reddish colour.

Fargesia nitida 'Viking' forms a clump like growth, which means that every year the size of the plant grows a few centimetres. The problem of uncontrolled rhizome formation does not exist with bamboo varieties from the Fargesia group. Thus you do not need a rhizome barrier to stop the spread of rhizomes.

Thus, the advantages of the 'Viking' garden bamboo are clear and distinct:
• No rhizomes
• No time-consuming rhizome barrier needed
• Dense growth
• Wintergreen

Slightly overhanging in old age

Fargesia nitida 'Viking' loves partially shaded locations with higher humidity, sunny locations are well tolerated with a good nutrient and water supply, but the growth rate will then be lower. In general, the bamboo 'Viking' loves a nutrient-rich, partially shaded location; it is absolutely hardy down to 25°C.

This bamboo variety forms thick, upright shoots and is 4 m high and forms up to 3 m wide clumps. In old age, the upright shoots can easily overhang and they look very elegant. Due to the dense growth – both with the leaves and the canes – and the winter-green foliage, this bamboo variety is perfectly suitable as a screen. In order to control the height, cuttings can be easily taken. To limit the height, the canes can be cut to the desired height or individual shoots can be removed. With hedges, pruning with a hedge trimmer is possible.

And when does this bamboo bloom?

The answer to this question is: hopefully not at all. Like most bamboos, Fargesia die after flowering. As a result of the flowering effort, the plants were so exhausted that afterwards they no longer have any energy to continue their growth. Fortunately, bamboos bloom only every 80-130 years. Mysteriously, all bamboos of the same species bloom within 5-10 years. Why this is so is still unclear. The last flowering period of the bamboos of the Fargesia genus is not long back; just before the turn of the millennium they flourished for the last time. So the next flowering period will take place at the earliest in 60 to 80 years.
