Product information "Umbrella Bamboo 'Campbell'"

The tall-growing umbrella bamboo 'Campbell' is the tallest of our hardy bamboo that does not form rhizomes. The thick canes grow up to 6 m high and have a rich green colour; the upright habit amazes due to the immensely high canes.
Upright growth

The tall-growing umbrella bamboo 'Campbell' does justice to its name, as the canes grow up to 6 m high. In our latitudes, this is one of the highest bamboo species. In order to achieve such a height, however, strong canes are required; the canes of this tall-growing umbrella bamboo are up to 3 cm in diameter. The shoots are slightly reddish and the offshoots are bristly.
By the way, they can be eaten raw, of course only when the bristles have been removed. The canes are dominated by striking, bright sheaths that form a strong contrast to the rich green-coloured canes. Despite its height, the bamboo 'Campbell' grows upright with slightly hanging tips. The leaves retain their fresh green colour until the first strong frosts; only in the winter do part of the leaves turn yellow and fall off. However, many leaves remain on the plant until spring.
A heat-tolerant giant

Like all Fargesia, this variety 'Campbell' also grows clump-like, that is it does not form rhizomes. First, the canes remain close together. As the bamboo ages, however, the distance between the canes becomes even greater; after 10 years this bamboo can occupy up to 7 square metres of space (2.5 x 2.5 m) and the growth character is loosely scattered. Those who have less space can regularly divide parts of the bamboo, so that the clump is more compact.
'Campbell' is a very heat-tolerant bamboo, even in warm areas it can be planted in a sunny location.  The bamboo 'Campbell' does not like the shade. In the first years or in severe winters, winter protection is recommended; temperatures lower than -20°C results in damage that can cause the bamboo to die. The best is a straw bale near the root area, so the new shoots are protected in the spring, even from late frosts. Pruning is usually not necessary, but can be carried out without any problems by simply cutting the canes to the desired height. Every 5 years, old canes, recognisable by their yellowish colour, should be removed. In order to keep the clump compact, you can regularly divide parts, as already mentioned, which can be reused in new places.
Expresses an exotic atmosphere

Use Fargesia robusta 'Campbell' as a solitary plant in places where a lot of space is available. The loose forest of bamboo that develops looks wonderfully exotic. But even solitary bamboo plants, which are kept somewhat more compact by cutting off parts, develop into imposing plants. In large pots, the tall-growing bamboo 'Campbell' can also decorate impressive places and can be used as mentioned also in hot locations, as long as a sufficient supply of water is ensured.
