Product information "Umbrella Bamboo 'Obelisk'®"

The umbrella bamboo 'Obelisk' can be used as an ornamental plant due to its beautiful columnar growth. The dense canes are green and they stay green in the winter.
Advantages of Fargesia

Not all bamboo is the same; the different types and genera differ from each other. One of these genera is Fargesia, which is distinguished by its clump-like growth form. Thus, no runners are formed, which would grow uncontrollably into your neighbour’s garden. The clump only grows a few centimetres wider each year. What more could one want of a bamboo: not proliferating, dense foliage, hardy.
A winter green column, an ideal privacy screen

As the name suggests, Fargesia nitida 'Obelisk' grows slender and columnar. It can reach up to 3 m high and it reaches a width of 2 m. As already mentioned, plants from the genus Fargesia grow clump-like and they do not form runners. In order to keep the clump compact, the plant can also be divided into pieces using a spade. The pieces can be transplanted to another location. For a thick hedge, plant at a distance of 150 cm; if the hedge should be fuller faster, the bamboo can also be planted closer together (approx. 1 m spacing).
This columnar bamboo forms innumerable, green canes, which are dense and can assume a reddish colour in the sun. Since the large, green and elongated leaves remain on the plant in the colder months, the privacy screen is also guaranteed in the winter.
An undemanding plant, also suitable for balconies

This bamboo variety is very heat-tolerant and can easily be planted at hot locations near the street. The growth rate is however lower in sunny locations than on partially shaded ones. Due to its hardiness down to -25°C it is easy to use in our region. The canes can be simply cut back to control the growth. For this purpose, the shoots can be cut to the desired height or whole canes can be removed. The plant grows back without problems. No demands are made on the soil and every garden soil is tolerated. Due to the columnar growth and the easy way to limit growth, the bamboo 'Obelisk' can also be used in small gardens and even in large pots on terraces. However, as a pot plant, the root area must not dry out, so in the summer the bamboo must be watered regularly. In the winter the pot should be packed well to prevent the roots from freezing. Due to the winter green foliage, water is also evaporated when the weather is sunny, so it is absolutely necessary to water the plant on frost-free days.
Mysterious flowering

The flowering is a last feat of strength in the life of a bamboo, after which the plants die. This is the case with the Fargesia; they have a flowering rhythm of 80-130 years, then all plants of the species begin to bloom within 5-10 years and then die. How it comes to the phenomenon is still largely unknown, it is assumed that the bamboos possess a kind of internal clock.

The dying cannot really be counteracted; cutting all of the shoots to the ground or removing the flower is sometimes considered to be helpful, but the effect usually remains the same. But do not worry, the last Fargesia bloom was just before the end of the millennium, so with the now purchased plants a life span of about 60-80 years remains. Then the next generation of gardeners can take care of it. ;-)
