Product information "Umbrella Bamboo 'Red Zebra'®"

The play of colours offered by the umbrella bamboo 'Red Zebra' is spectacular. The young canes appear striped in a dark red to pink colour with yellow sections. Later, the canes are intense burgundy and sometimes almost black. Then there are the winter-green leaves, which form an unusual contrast to the red colour.
What does a red zebra look like?

The name sounds like the latest nursery rhyme: the red zebra. But what do you imagine a red zebra looks like? Red with white stripes or red with black stripes? If you look at this bamboo, then more likely red with white, black and green stripes because this colour combination can provide the umbrella bamboo 'Red Zebra'. The canes have an intense burgundy colour, sometimes they appear almost black. Add to that the bright sheaths and the light green leaves, which make an impressive play of colours! The fresh canes that sprout from the ground are often lightly striped with different shades of red with yellow sections in between. They can also be used for Asian dishes as long as they are still tender. Throughout the year, the canes change colour, sometimes they appear bright red, sometimes rather dark red and in between, a bluish undertone seems to prevail. The play of colours is independent of the sunlight.
A play of colours in the sun and in the shade

The growth of Fargesia murielae 'Red Zebra' is average; it reaches about 3 m high and 1.5 m wide, and has a very upright habit. Like all Fargesias, Fargesia murielae 'Red Zebra' does not form any rhizomes, so a rhizome barrier is not necessary. If the bamboo grows too broad, single sections can be cut out and used in another place. To limit the height of the shoots, simply cut to the desired height; using a hedge trimmer for a hedge is also possible. The umbrella bamboo 'Red Zebra' tolerates sunny and shady locations, however in the shade the increase in height is less than in partial shade. It prefers a loose, well-drained and nutrient-rich soil.

The umbrella bamboo 'Red Zebra' can be used as a screen, grown as an individual plant or in a container. Due to the exciting colouring, we recommend a location where the plant can be admired.
The bamboo blossom, a rare event

The flowering of the bamboos is a mysterious puzzle. Bamboos only form flowers every 80-130 years, which is better, because after flowering, the plants die, which makes it seem that the process is very strenuous. Dying cannot really be counteracted. Even more mysterious is that all the bamboos of one species bloom almost simultaneously, within about 10 years. It is still unclear how it comes to this almost synchronous flowering event. What we do know is that the plants are not expected to flower in the next 60-80 years, since the last Fargesias bloomed around 1995.
