Product information "Umbrella Bamboo 'Simba'"
The umbrella bamboo 'Simba' appears wide due to its overhanging canes. These overhanging canes, studded with small, bright leaves, look almost like a lion's mane. Due to the low vigour and the high tolerance to shade, it is able to lighten even small, dark spots in the garden.Wide growth and a bright appearance
This bamboo has overhanging canes with fine, light green, almost yellowish leaves. When the wind blows through the bamboo and the sun shines on the leaves, they appear almost golden and it looks a bit like a mighty lion shaking its mane. The dense, thin canes grow up to 2 m high and are overhanging. The stalks are initially fresh green, but then soon take on a yellow hue. The fresh, delicate sprouts are popular ingredients for Asian dishes. Since Fargesia murielae 'Simba' forms a clump that is up to 1.5 m in diameter and does not have rhizomes, no rhizome barrier is necessary.
Predestined for shady locations
The umbrella bamboo 'Simba' comes from a selection from Denmark and was selected for the conditions that prevail in Denmark. Therefore, this Fargesia is extremely frost hardy to at least -28°C. In cool areas and regions with a higher humidity, a sunny location can be chosen. In more southern areas, however, this species of bamboo does not tolerate a sunny site, which means it must be positioned in a semi-shady or shady location. However, this is not so bad because there is a lack of shade-tolerant plants and the bright leaves of this bamboo can lighten a shady spot in the garden.
The soil should be permeable and nutrient-rich. The umbrella bamboo 'Simba' tolerates easily tolerates pruning like all Fargesias. For this you can remove the individual shoots entirely or cut the plant at the desired height.
A wintergreen privacy screen
As already mentioned, this bamboo is ideal for lightening dark spots in the garden, but it can also be used well as a privacy screen due to its dense and wide habit. Another advantage is that the leaves stay on the plant during the winter, which enables opaque privacy, also in the winter. Since this umbrella bamboo is only about 2 m high, it can also be conveniently used in pots on terraces or balconies.
