Product information "Umbrella Bamboo 'Standing Stone'®"

Fargesia murielae 'Standing Stone' is one of the toughest bamboos that can easily withstand heat, cold and drought. Its thick, arched and slightly overhanging canes are apparently very resistant.
Slightly overhanging growth

The umbrella bamboo 'Standing Stone' is strong and vigorous; the canes are thick for Fargesias. They are grass green when they sprout and then take on a yellow colour as they age. The thick canes grow slightly arched and can also be overhanging. At the same time, the stems grow more upright in cooler locations since they harden faster. The green foliage is slightly larger than other bamboos and is stays on the plant in the winter. With a plant height of up to 3.5 m and a final width of 2 m, this bamboo is average in size. Like all Fargesias, 'Standing Stone' does not form rhizome and so a rhizome barrier is not necessary during planting.
The rare flowering of bamboos

In the description of plants, the flowers usually come at the beginning, but this is not the case with bamboo. This is because the flowering period is not a popular phenomenon, it is even feared. Why, you ask yourself? Bamboos die completely after flowering and this dying cannot be counteracted. Fortunately, bamboos bloom only every 80-130 years, and generally all bamboo plants worldwide bloom within 10 years, as if directed by an internal returning clock; and it can also be said how long it will take before the next flowering. The last Fargesias bloomed in 1995, making flowering unlikely to occur in the next 60-80 years.
Robust, vigorous bamboo

This bamboo variety was selected in Northern Germany from Danish seedlings. As a result, the umbrella bamboo 'Standing Stone' is extremely hardy. It is also relatively robust against heat and drought. However, even this variety curls its leaves in the summer at a hot location, probably in order to evaporate less water. In addition, the growth rate is slower in a sunny and hot location. At very hot locations, the root area can be covered with a 5 cm thick layer of pine bark. The soil should be loose, well-drained and nutritious. Incidentally, the young, still delicate sprouts of all Fargesias are edible and are often used in Asian cuisine.
Due to the wide habit and the very dense canes and leaves, Fargesia murielae 'Standing Stone' is very well suited as a privacy screen. By the way, also on balconies and terraces in a large pot. Even as a solitary tree it is very attractive. As a potted plant, it must be ensured that the pot never completely dries out; thus it should also be watered on frost-free days during the winter.
