Product information "Golden Chinese Timber Bamboo 'Aureocaulis'"

Phyllostachys vivax 'Aureocaulis' has different canes, yellow with green stripes, green with yellow stripes or all green; it is the magician among the bamboo varieties.

The colouring of the canes is always surprising. Usually the canes are yellow with delicate, green stripes. But it often comes to mutations, and this is how the green canes with yellow stripes or very green or yellow canes appear.

Always surprising

The canes of this “magic” bamboo 'Aureocaulis' are actually pale yellow to ochre with green stripes and the stripes are different from cane to canes. On the basis of appearance, the critical observer may claim that it is a “normal” yellow bamboo that has been painted with stripes; the green stripes have a tender and partially blurred effect. But here no donkey is sold as a zebra, the golden Chinese timber bamboo 'Aureocaulis' really grows like that! As if surprises are not enough, this bamboo cannot be easily forced into the norm. Time and again, it conjures up new mutations. Often, canes appear, which are exactly the opposite of the norm, namely green with yellow stripes, and some canes are also completely green. Again and again there is something new to discover, maybe there are even other forms of mutation. With this bamboo in the garden things remain exciting in any case.

From the original distribution area to the ideal location

Phyllostachys vivax 'Aureocaulis' was created as a mutation of Phyllostachys vivax 'Huangwenzhu'. These mutations are still expressed today by the different colours of the canes. The original distribution area is located in Sichuan, a province in central China. Despite the location, surrounded by mountains, there is a subtropical climate in the valley. However, the range extends to the mountains of central China, where a harsh, cold climate with little snow prevails in the winter and the summers are cool.

The following can be derived from the original distribution area. The bamboo 'Aureocaulis' loves warmth, but also grows in a cooler climate. Old plants are hardy to -20°C; younger plants should be protected during the winter.

Heights of up to 12 m can be reached in a warm and sunny location; in northern Germany heights of 8-10 m are conceivable. A protected location should be chosen in any case. Despite the cane diameter of up to 7 cm, they are still susceptible to wind and snow damage. In preparation for the winter, the canes of this bamboo should be tied together so that the snow cannot break apart the canes and break them off. With younger plants, a layer of straw can be distributed around the root area in order to protect the bamboo and its roots from low temperatures.

Vigorous rhizomes

The bamboo 'Aureocaulis' forms vigorous rhizomes that are difficult to remove. In order to prevent uncontrolled spreading, a rhizome barrier should be used. A rhizome barrier consists of a thick, durable plastic that separates the garden area from where the bamboo is supposed to grow. This barrier is placed at a depth of 1.5 m and should also end about 5-10 cm above the edge of the lawn so that the rhizomes will not be allowed to grow over and under the barrier. An annual check on whether some rhizomes have escaped from the “prison” is certainly recommended. In order to obtain a nice growth, an area of at least 10 m² should be provided. Inside the barrier, old and weak canes can be removed. Old canes are good for crafts or supporting other plants; young sprouts can be used when cooking Asian dishes.

Flower formation

Like all bamboos, Phyllostachys vivax 'Aureocaulis' has a long flowering cycle: the plants bloom only every 80-130 years. The bamboos of a genus synchronise in such a way that they bloom within 10-15 years, so that all Phyllostachys flower in the same period. In particular, Phyllostachys usually do not die off after flowering. They can form new shoots after a strong pruning and good fertilisation. Since 1990, single flowers have been observed on Phyllostachys, but the seeds are not germinable and established plants did not die by 2016. It is believed that it is only a pseudo-bloom.
