Product information "Arrow Bamboo"

The Japanese arrow bamboo is one of the most popular bamboos for balconies and terraces. The charm lies especially in the large, dark green leaves and the green, dense canes that have bright leaf sheaths.

Decorative leaf sheaths

This Japanese arrow bamboo is particularly popular because of the large leaves, which grow up to 35 cm long and are dark green. They are close to the canes and thus provide particularly good privacy. The canes have a fresh green colour and they turn slightly reddish in the sun; the old stalks take on a yellowish colour. The bright leaf sheaths are very visible; they stay on the plant until the second year and then fall off. The canes grow upright and the tips are slightly overhanging. The distance between the canes is very dense, thus achieving a compact, opaque effect. This bamboo grows up to 5m high.

The canes are hard-wearing and firm and were formerly often used for the production of arrowheads. In its original home on the Korean peninsula and in Japan, large stocks are often found near castles and fortification complexes.

No profound rhizomes

Pseudosasa japonica prefers a partially shaded to sunny spot in a warm, sheltered site. In order to prevent the formation of dry leaf tips, a good water supply should be ensured. At -18°C, leaf damage may occur, but the underground parts of the plants are frost hardy and will sprout again, if the canes die back at -20°C.

This bamboo species forms rhizomes. The young plants form few rhizomes, but the older plants very many. Therefore, it is recommended to use a rhizome barrier that prevents the bamboo from spreading to undesired areas.

Fortunately, the rhizomes of the Japanese arrow bamboo are formed at a depth of about 30-50 cm. First of all, it sounds like a lot, but you have to keep in mind that other bamboos form rhizomes up to 1.5 meters deep. It is therefore sufficient to install a barrier that extends to 80 cm in the ground. The upper part of the barrier should extend to 10 cm above the edge of the lawn in order to prevent the rhizomes from “jumping” over the barrier. In order for the growth of Pseudosasa japonica to develop nicely, at least 6 m² should be planned.

Winter protection is recommended

This Japanese arrow bamboo is one of the most popular bamboos for balconies and terraces. It also has dense growth in pots and can be used as a privacy protection hedge. Especially in pots, but also in fields, some rules are to be observed during the winter:

1. Protect against winter sun (evaporation via the evergreen leaves)
2. Wrap the pot (add straw to the root area in cold locations outdoors)
3. Protect against winter winds

If damage occurs in the winter, the frozen canes can be removed. Canes with leaf damage recover and green leaves will sprout again. Due to the good tolerance to pruning, beautiful, cut hedges can be created. This bamboo is also suitable as an indoor plant.
