Product information "Fountain Bamboo"

This fountain bamboo is not only very vigorous, thanks to the dense foliage, it is also completely opaque. Due to its overhanging, wide habit only a few specimens are needed to plant an area.
Vigorous bamboo
This fountain bamboo owes its name to its growth form, which is at first upright, but over time the shoots sometimes hang over like a fountain. The canes are green and then turn yellowish with age. They are densely covered with rich green leaves. This fountain bamboo reaches heights of up to 3 m, in cooler areas also over 3 m. New canes are formed in the spring and they leaf out quickly. The bamboo then shoots out again in autumn and produces leaves on these stalks before winter. Due to its growth, Fargesia rufa is one of the densest bamboos and it is absolutely opaque due to the evergreen leaves, even in the winter.
Like all Fargesias, this fountain bamboo grows clump-like and does not forms rhizomes. The clumps can reach up to 2 m in diameter. By cutting off root parts the clump can also be kept smaller.
Robust and easy to maintain

The preferred location of most bamboos is in partial shade with nutrient-rich and deep soil. Fargesia rufa also tolerates sunny or shady conditions. Unlike other bamboos, the leaves will not curl up, even in full sun. In the winter, this fountain bamboo is undemanding; down to -25°C, no damage can be expected and experts believe that even lower temperatures are easily withstood. In a sunny location, care should be taken during the winter for a sufficient supply of water, otherwise drought may occur. Therefore, it should be checked on frost-free days, whether the water supply is still sufficient or whether the plant should be watered. In container plantings with bamboo this is indispensable! Bamboos die of dryness rather than cold.
Usage tips

Fargesia rufa is ideal as a hedge because its dense canes are covered with many leaves, creating an absolutely opaque screen. As an uncut hedge, Fargesia rufa grows strongly in width, so only a few plants are needed to fill the hedge. However, this fountain bamboo is also ideal as a cut hedge due to its richly leaved caned. Even on terraces and balconies, this fountain bamboo can be used in pots as a hedge. In the winter, however, the pots should be protected from the cold.

For a cut hedge, you can cut the canes to a desired height, i.e. remove the side shoots. Thus the side shoots will not hang over so much because they have less shoot weight to carry. Individual shoots can be completely removed or cut to the desired height.
Bamboo flowering

You have never seen a bamboo plant bloom? Neither have I! This is a rare and often unwanted event. Fargesias bloom only every 80-130 years; after flowering the plants die off as they have spent so much energy on flowering. The offspring have been taken care of, now the old generation can cede... Recently, Fargesias flowered around the turn of the millennium, so a bloom is not expected in the next 60 to 80 years. Another special feature of the bamboo blossom is that all Fargesia flower and die off within about 10 years of each other. However, after the bamboo plants blossom usually new and interesting varieties arise, which then populate the gardens again for the next 60 to 80 years (for about 3 generations of people). Ultimately, the current diversity of varieties is a result of the last flowering and dying of the previous bamboo generation.
