Product information "Umbrella Bamboo 'Jumbo'"

Less growth in height and more in width is in the foreground of the umbrella bamboo 'Jumbo'. With a height of 3 m it is truly no giant. However, this bamboo grows quickly in width. The shoots are overhanging.
A broad, overhanging habit

With this bamboo, the variety name 'Jumbo' is more related to its growth in width than its height. With a height of about 3 m, it is not among the giants of bamboos. In the width, however, this variety grows quickly as soon as a diameter of 1.5-2 m is reached. The rapid growth in width is advantageous, especially for using in a hedge since the plant requirements are massively reduced by using this umbrella bamboo. In addition, the green canes are close together and grow overhanging, giving the bamboo an exotic appearance. In shady locations, however, the growth is more upright. The young canes are still fresh green, then they become increasingly yellow with age; as long as they are tender, they are edible. The leaves are tender green and they stay on the plant even in the winter, which means there is continuous privacy.
Prefers a shady location

Fargesia murielae 'Jumbo' wants a partially shaded to shady location. Only where there is high humidity and a good water supply can a sunny location be selected. The soil should be permeable and nutrient-rich. If the plant is too wide, individual parts can easily be dug up; the dug up parts can easily be used at another location. Pruning is also not a problem; the stalks can be cut back well to the desired height. This allows you to constantly have bamboo canes for tying other plants in the garden. A hedge trimmer can be used when this bamboo is planted in a hedge.
Easy care

One of the advantages of the umbrella bamboo 'Jumbo' is that you do not need any elaborate rhizome barrier since the Fargesias do not form rhizomes. The root ball only grows a few centimetres each year. Also the extreme winter hardiness is to be highlighted; down to -25°C no winter damage is to be expected. Only in too sunny locations it can happen that the leaves roll up. This is done to protect the plant from drying up, as it still evaporates water via the leaves and water cannot be absorbed from the frozen soil.
Also suitable as a screen on balconies

You can use the umbrella bamboo 'Jumbo' ideally as a hedge plant; even on balconies in pots, it can be used as a wintergreen privacy screen. As a solitary plant, this bamboo can lighten shady locations thanks to its light green leaves.
