Product information "Bamboo 'Winter Joy'"

The garden bamboo ‘Winter Joy’ is very decorative due to its dark green canes with red undertones; in the winter, the light green, small leaves stay on the plant and they are visually appealing even in the winter.

Beautiful colour of the canes

The garden bamboo 'Winter Joy' remains slightly smaller than other Fargesia hybrids; it is only about 3 m high and forms 1.5 m wide clumps. The dense canes are dark green with a slightly reddish background colour. The sunnier the plant stands, the stronger this colour is formed. The fine, tender green leaves of this bamboo stay on the plant during the winter and thus are beautifully decorative even in the winter. The canes grow upright and have slightly overhanging tips.

A rhizome barrier is not necessary

Since all Fargesias do not form any clumps, they do not require a complicated rhizome barrier, and you do not have to worry that the bamboo will spread out of control. The garden bamboo 'Winter Joy' will only increase the diameter of its clump by a few centimetres every year until it reaches the final size of 1.5 m in diameter.

Hardiness

Another advantage of Fargesias is the good winter hardiness; down to -20°C, no winter damage can be expected. Fargesia nitida 'Winter Joy' prefers a sunny or partially shaded site; however a shady location can be chosen as well. A normal garden soil is sufficient for this undemanding plant. Pruning 'Winter Joy' is simple; you can regularly remove the canes or cut to the desired height. As a nice side effect of the cutting is that one gets bamboo canes, for example, which can be used to support other plants, etc. If the clump is too wide you can simply cut out some of it and plant it elsewhere.

Good privacy, also on balconies

You can also use this bamboo as a potted plant on the balcony, but it must be ensured in the winter that the root area is not completely frozen. The winter sun is also dangerous because water evaporates via the leaves, even during the winter. In order to prevent this, one must water the potted plants on frost-free days. This garden bamboo is well suited outdoors as a privacy screen due to the dense growth and the numerous wintergreen leaves. In a hedge you can also cut the bamboo with a hedge trimmer. Also along bodies of water it can be used well as a solitary plant.

Unique blossoms

Now to the bamboo blossoms: bamboos bloom only once in their lifetime; they are so exhausted from this that they die afterwards. However, such a flowering event occurs only every 80-130 years, while all the bamboos of a species bloom within a few years. How it comes to this almost synchronous flowering of all the same bamboos is still largely unexplained. Since the last bloom of the Fargesias appeared shortly before the turn of the millennium, the next flowering will take place at the earliest in 60 to 80 years. When it is time to present the flowers, nothing can be done about it. It is sometimes said that you should remove the flowers and cut the plant to ground level, but the bamboos can barely be outsmarted and deterred from their programmed death instinct.
