Product information "Clematis 'Aotearo'"

This interesting variety with the difficult name was bred in New Zealand by Alister Keay and presented in the early 1990s. It is a dense and medium high growing (250 to 300 cm) clematis with large, deep violet flowers. Each flower consists of six regularly arranged petals and measures 10 to 12 cm in diameter. The colour contrast of the long, white stamens with the dark flower colour is particularly attractive. The flowering period extends from the beginning of July to the end of September.
Clematis viticella Aotearoa prefers a sunny location with a humus-rich, evenly moist soil. It also thrives without problems in semi-shade. Since the flowering is carried out on this year's shoots, a regular, annual pruning to a shoot length of 20 to 50 cm is advisable. This should be done in February.
This colour-intensive, New Zealand clematis is vital and reliably hardy. It greens trellises, pergolas and walls and is also highly recommended for a permanent plantings in containers. Since the dark colour does not have a good effect from a distance, a location close to the road or near a sitting area is advantageous. The deep violet colour is very elegant, particularly when combined with pure white and light blue. Bright colour contrasts can be achieved with yellow and orange. Roses, perennials, summer flowers and bulbs offer a wide range of possibilities.
