Product information "Clematis 'Prince Charles'"

Clematis viticella Prince Charles has a beautiful, bright blue colour. This variety is a very special, magical and romantic one. The flowers appear from early June to September in dense, light blue clouds. One single flower has 4 to 6 petals with pretty, wavy edges and a diameter of 8 to 10 cm. The stamens are pale yellow, which makes the overall impression very delicate and light.
With a growth height of 180 to 250 cm, this clematis remains rather compact. Therefore, it is very suitable for permanently planting in containers. However, Prince Charles is also very elegant when grown on rose arches, obelisks and trellises in beds. The light blue has a good long-distance effect and colourfully brightens dark garden parts. At the end of a plot, for example, planted against a wall or a fence, the bright blue gives the visual impression of freedom and is therefore also a top choice for small properties.

Combined with pink roses and white baby’s breath, magical, romantic pictures in the garden are created. But the delicate blue is also good for strong colours such as dark violet, purple and orange. A truly royal marriage is clematis viticella Prince Charles with the pink blossoming clematis texensis Princess Diana. Its elegant, tulip-shaped flowers harmonise wonderfully with the bright, open, bowl-shaped flowers of Prince Charles.
Regarding the location, this highly recommended clematis is not demanding. It loves sunny sites, but also thrives in the shade without problems. Only fully shaded garden areas should be avoided. Since the flowering takes place on the young (this year’s) shoots, an annual pruning to 20 to 50 cm above the ground is recommended in February. The clematis will then strongly produce many shoots again and more buds will be formed in the early summer.

Altogether, clematis viticella Prince Charles is a vital, rich flowering variety with its bright flower colour resulting in versatile design possibilities. It is robust and very hardy and it is not affected by clematis wilt. This variety was bred in the 1970s by Alister Keay in New Zealand. There it was introduced around 1975 by the New Zealand Clematis Nurseries as Prince Charles. In 1986, Fisks Clematis Nursery introduced the variety to England. Prince Charles has been planted in many countries over the years and has gained more and more fans.
