Product information "Hedera hibernica - Ivy"
Plants per square meter: 6-9 piecesSince the middle of the 19th century, Hedera hibernica has been common in Germany and since then it represents a large proportion of the ivy that is grown in local gardens.
The special features of the large-leafed, Irish ivy is its very strong growth, which quickly creates a dense, high cushion from the small plant, thus suppressing weeds completely reliably. The plant has long petioles and strong stems with an internode spacing of 5 to 7 cm.
The bright green, matt foliage turns only slightly reddish in the winter. The leaves have five lobes and are up to 14 cm long. They grow on 5 to 20 cm long petioles and are traversed with light green veins. The first flowers develop only with age, after 10 years, on the shoot tips.
Since this ivy with its adventitious roots can easily adhere anywhere, it can hide unsightly corners in the garden, cover building facades or walls and it can wrap around trees in order to reach light. It quickly forms a dense, weed-free carpet; Hedera hibernica is also suitable as a ground cover. It spreads matt-shaped and can quickly cover large areas.
Hedera hibernica is deemed an absolutely hardy plant and is undemanding when it comes to the location and soil requirements. The variety grows well in the shade and in the sun. However, hibernica is not as hardy as Hedera helix. In very cold temperatures and when subject to the winter sun, it suffers in the continental climate. For this reason, shady places are generally more favourable. In harsh locations, Hedera helix 'Woerneri' is more recommended.
