Product information "Monkey Puzzle Tree"

The growth of the monkey puzzle tree is unique and can be seen from a distance: the roller-shaped branches are arranged in regular whirls and form clearly recognisable levels. The tree grows conical with a straight, upright trunk. The needles are also unique in the plant kingdom. They are greatly widened, scale-like and triangular. The surface shines like it is painted and the colour is a deep dark green. Each needle has a sharp tip – this evergreen tree protects itself in its home in the Andes from damage caused by animals.

Slow development

Araucaria araucana grows very slowly; it takes several years to grow. After ten years it is about 120 high and 80 cm wide. At an advanced age the trees can reach a size of 20 m, however they need several decades to grow to this height. It is important that enough room is available for this valuable garden plant from the beginning. It is very unfortunate if Araucaria, for example, has been planted close to a house and its distinct growth form must be disfigured after a few years by cutting.

Not for every garden

This Chile pine is demanding and needs certain conditions in order to be able to thrive optimally. On the one hand, it is not reliably frost hardy and is therefore not suitable for rough regions. It can withstand frosts up to -12°C. Since it loves moist areas, it grows particularly well in coastal climates. In the Oldenburg region, in Hamburg and in East Friesland, Germany there are some very old, stately specimens. The soil should be deep, loose and slightly acidic to neutral. Calcareous soils are not suitable. If the plant is provided with a location that is protected from winter winds, this Andean treasure has the best conditions.
