Product information "Strawberry Tree 'Atlantic'"

The evergreen strawberry tree, more precisely the western strawberry tree Arbutus unedo 'Atlantic', can delight you with flowers and fruits at the same time. The fruits can be eaten or simply admired. 'Atlantic' has evergreen, dark green leaves and white, bell-shaped flowers with a hint of pink. Do you like fruit? Do you like the Mediterranean and the South? Then bring a southern dream into your home with the strawberry tree.

Four main advantages of the 'Atlantic' strawberry tree:
  • An evergreen plant
  • Can bear flowers and fruit simultaneously due to the long ripening period of the fruit
  • Autumn flowering, from October to December
  • White to pink flowers, reminiscent of lilies of the valley

Does the strawberry tree really bear strawberries?
Wouldn't it be a dream to be able to pick strawberries from a tree, never having to bend down again to get a delicacy? The fruits of the strawberry tree have the typical reddish colour that is similar to our native strawberries. They invite you to bite into them, but their taste is not as sweet as that of strawberries; it’s rather bland. However, this does not prevent Portuguese farmers from distilling a schnapps, the Aguardente de Medronho, made from these fruits. The fruits can also be enjoyed as jam, liqueur or wine. The name “unedo” was given to this plant by a Roman. “Unus” means “one” and “edo” means “I eat”. With this statement he meant that it is enough for him to eat this fruit once.

Botanical information about the strawberry tree Arbutus unedo
The strawberry tree belongs to the heather family. It is not really a tree but a large growing shrub. And it does not like to be pruned.

How hardy is the strawberry tree?
As a Mediterranean plant, the strawberry tree is not adapted to extremely icy temperatures. It is best suited as a container plant, which should be overwintered in a bright but cool place during the winter. In very mild regions, the strawberry tree can also be planted out and can withstand temperatures of around -8 to -10 degrees Celsius for short periods.

Using the strawberry tree as a medicinal plant
The fruit of the strawberry tree is said to have a diuretic and antiseptic effect. It is also anti-inflammatory and cleanses the blood. As a tea, the leaves and roots may only be enjoyed in small quantities.

Brief description of the western strawberry tree 'Atlantic'

Flowers:
The flowers are white to pink and look like lilies of the valley.

Appearance:
The bark is reddish brown and greyish patched. It feels smooth and detaches over the years. The leaves of this evergreen shrub are dark green and oval with a toothed edge. They grow about 10 cm long. The shrub 'Atlantic' grows in its Mediterranean home about 5-6 m tall; in our region it hardly grows taller than 1.5 to 2 m.

Fruits:
Despite its name, the fruits of the strawberry tree do not taste like strawberries; they only have the same red colour. During ripening, the colour of the fruit changes from lemon yellow to red. The skin of the 3 cm small fruit is similar to that of lychees, the flesh is bright orange. The taste is sweet and bland. Only after the 5th year the gardener is rewarded with fruits.

Winter hardiness:
We offer the strawberry tree 'Atlantic' as a container plant. In the winter you have to place it in a cool, bright location with a temperature between 0-10 degrees Celsius. If it is too dark for the tree, it will lose its flowers and fruits.

Conclusion: With this shrub you get a strong, evergreen plant that thrives well in a pot. 'Atlantic' surpasses the other varieties by its more compact and closed growth and the higher number of flowers and larger fruits.
