Product information "Carolina silverbell"

The pure white, bell-shaped flowers of the Carolina silverbell appear gracefully in April and May, contrasting with the dark green foliage. The flowers are popular with insects. There is another, similar shrub called snowbell (Styrax), but it blooms later and requires less acidic soils. These two plants are not related. Carolina silverbell is a broad-growing, large shrub that grows up to 4 m high and 3 m wide. In warm weather, a beautiful, yellow autumn colour develops. Also in winter, the shrub is attractive: the winged, 2-4 cm large fruits sometimes stay at the tree until spring; they are well suited for flower arrangements. This hardy shrub should be planted in a sunny, sheltered locations; the soil should be rather humid and acidic. Halesia carolina is not very well known, but it is absolutely desirable, as the shrub needs shade at its base. This can be done with acidic, semi-shade-tolerant perennials or low-growing rhododendrons or azaleas. This shrub should not be pruned too frequently, as the flowers develop on last year's wood. However, thinning out is possible.
