Product information "Bluebeard 'Blauer Spatz'"

The bluebeard 'Blauer Spatz' grows compact and is up to 90 cm wide, with a height of about 70 cm. The beautiful, dark blue flowers, which bloom relatively late in the year (from August to September), form a strong contrast to the silvery green leaves. This variety is the "blueest" variety among the bluebeards; and it is probably one of the "blueest" ornamental shrubs in the world. This is a very rich flowering variety; the flowers appear to the shoot tips and thus bring an intense effect of the blooms, which attract numerous insects. For the human nose, however, the leaves are interesting, as they radiate an herb-like, aromatic scent.
Caryopteris x clandonensis 'Blue Sparrow' needs a sunny, rather dry location with humus-rich soil.
Bluebeards are only absolutely winter hardy at temperatures above -15°C. When the temperatures are lower, a slight winter protection is recommended. For this purpose, a thick foliage layer can be applied in the root area of the plants. Above-ground freezing is, however, not a great problem, since a strong pruning is necessary in the spring in order to obtain rich flowering. Bluebeards, like many other autumn blossoms, flower only on this year's wood. Pruning can extend into the old wood and up to 15 cm above the ground. In order to achieve a full bloom, it is advised not to apply to much fertiliser, as this reduces the plant’s ability to bloom.
This variety is suitable as a solitary plant, for area plantings and as a container plant on sunny terraces. Due to its high resistance to heat, it is suitable for both Mediterranean gardens and the hot city climate. In particular, the combination with lavender and Perovskia is suitable.
