Product information "Red Witch Hazel 'Ruby Glow'"

Hamamelis intermedia 'Ruby Glow' is fascinating due to its red, striking flowers that appear in January and February.

The New Year has barely begun and already the red witch hazel 'Ruby Glow' is blooming. In January and February, the inconspicuous flower buds form spectacular blossoms. Orange-red to red-brown, thread-shaped petals appear in large numbers and enchant the wintry garden.

A valuable winter bloomer

Witch hazel is one of the most valuable winter bloomers ever and very inconspicuous shortly before flowering. In the leafless state, before flowering, one could confuse the shrub with a normal hazelnut shrub. But unlike the hazelnut, the witch hazel already blooms in January and February. The inconspicuous shrub mysteriously transforms itself amidst the snow-covered garden.

A frost hardy beauty

The winter frosts cannot affect the flowers and even when temperatures are down to -10°C, the flowers recover magnificently. This shrub itself is absolutely hardy to -20°C. The flowers are filigree structures and the thread-shaped petals turn orange red to brownish red. In warmer weather they exude a pleasant, spring-like scent. The summer green leaves form only after flowering. In autumn, the shrub is again a highlight in the garden; the leaves are bronze to bright red.

Easy care

A Hamamelis shrub should occupy a prominent place in the garden so that it can be admired from as many places and sides as possible. The red witch hazel loves a sunny to partially shaded location with permeable, nutrient-rich soil. It does not tolerate compacted soils and waterlogging. Since Hamamelis intermedia 'Ruby Glow' has shallow roots, no mechanical treatment of the soil should be done, as this would damage the fine roots. And you should also do without something else: pruning! Witch hazels naturally grow slowly and loosely, forming a beautiful, funnel-shaped habit. Pruning measures often destroy the picturesque growth; witch hazels also form only a few new shoots on the old wood and large wounds heal poorly. Therefore, pruning should be limited to careful thinning out and the removal of smaller, disturbing shoots. As so often, it shows once again that doing nothing in the garden (at the right place) is often better than blind workaholism. ;-)

Growth and pot cultivation

Although Hamamelis 'Ruby Glow' is up to 3 m high and 2 m wide, you can also plant the plant in a pot on the balcony or terrace. However, the root ball should never dry out and in the winter the pot should be wrapped up. The pot size can start at 20-30 L for a young plant.
