Product information "Oak-leaved Hydrangea 'Ice Crystal'"

The leaves give the name to the oak-leaved hydrangea; they are slit and look very similar to oak leaves. This deciduous shrub produces beautiful, creamy flower panicles from June to August, which consist of barren, large ray florets, and fertile, small inner flowers. The inner flowers are a popular source of food for insects. In autumn, the 1.5 m high ornamental shrub has a very striking, dark red autumn colouration.
Hydrangea quercifolia 'Ice Crystal' can be planted in both the sun and shade; it is important that it has humus soil. This hydrangea prefers acidic to neutral soil. A sufficient supply of water is necessary, particularly during the flowering season. A mulch layer can be applied, so that moisture and organic matter are held in the soil. It should be noted, however, that a newly introduced mulch layer reduces the availability of the nutrients. There should be more fertilisation in this case. It is even better if the mulch layer is introduced in the second year. For a year, a little weeding is bearable. ;-) And the effort of the gardener helps the plant to establish itself better before being mulched.
This ornamental shrub has a particularly beautiful appearance in a group planting, but it can also be planted as a solitary shrub or in a container.
Pruning should be done in the spring, since the shoots partly freeze back. In this case, the seed pods are removed and, if necessary, thinned, since the flowers are formed on the two-year-old wood. Only thin out the old shoots.
