Product information "Oregon Grape"

Oregon grape is an evergreen ornamental shrub and with its yellow flowers that appear in April and May it is a real eye-catcher quite early in the year. Insects also enjoy the early supply of nectar. The yellow flowers form a strong contrast to the dark green, shining leaves. In the autumn, dark blue fruits appear and small quantities (a few fruits) can be eaten raw. This plant was formerly cultivated for the production of fruit, but the consumption of large quantities should be avoided since the fruit can then provoke stomach irritation. The leaves of the hardy ornamental shrub are pointed and stay on the plant for the entire year; in autumn, the plant has a reddish colouring and the winter leaves are sometimes bronze-coloured.
Mahonia aquifolium has a great potential for spreading due to its above-ground runners, which should be removed regularly.
Oregon grape is very adaptable and can grow well in a sunny or partially shaded location with sandy-humus soil. The 1 m high and equally wide ornamental shrub is also suitable as a underplanting of trees, in small hedges, in containers and of course as a solitary plant or in groups. This shrub can tolerate pruning and if the plant is too high, a strong cut to rejuvenate the plant can be carried out; the plant can be cut to 50 cm.
