Product information "Ornamental Apple 'Red Sentinel'"

Although the pink flowers are very beautiful, Malus 'Red Sentinel' is not planted for its blooms. Rather, the fruits are responsible for its popularity. They are red; they sit on long stems and they are similar to little cherries. And they stay on the tree until the New Year!

 Fruits until the New Year

The ornamental apple 'Red Sentinel' blooms white in May; the flowers develop from pink buds and are single-bloomed. Although the flowers are very beautiful to look at, this apple tree is not planted for its flowering effect. 'Red Sentinel' is convincing because of its fruits. They are spherical and apple-shaped, up to 2.5 cm in size and scarlet red-coloured. The fruit are reminiscent of cherries due to their long, red stems. And now here is the characteristic that makes this variety one of the best ornamental apples: the fruits remain for a very long on the plant; freezing temperatures down -10°C do not affect the fruits. For a long time in the New Year the fruits are undamaged and offer very beautiful winter decoration due to their bright colour. In addition, countless fruits are formed and it is possible to use some of the shoots for floral arrangements. Since they stay on the plant for a long time, one can also make very nice Christmas decorations with the fruits. The fruits and the whole plant are resistant to scab.

This slim-crowned variety is best suited for small gardens

This ornamental plant grows up to 4 m high and had a slender habit, which makes Malus 'Red Sentinel' ideally suited for small gardens.
The side shoots are slightly overhanging and very picturesque.
Like most ornamental apples, 'Red Sentinel' also prefers a sunny or partially shaded spot with normal garden soil. Pruning can be carried out at the end of February, whereby old shoots can be removed inside the crown. However, 2-3 years can pass without pruning. 'Red Sentinel' is often used as a solitary plant or for small groups. However, it can also be integrated into a wild fruit hedge and due to its slim growth this variety is also often used as a standard.
